For budget concious travellers, the Hotel Des Artistes is a good option without having to go to a hostel. The foyer is quite elegant in an old-timey way, though our room was quite simple, no frills with an ensuite. Hotel staff could be a little friendlier, and there was no hotel room safe.
Location wise it's about a 10 minute walk to the old town of Lyon and 10 minutes to upper Presquile where all the action is.

The receptionist, Marilyn, could not have been more helpful and pleasant. The hotel itself was extremely handy for the Place Celestine, just a few minutes away where we ate most nights. The restauarant Le Carre des Saveurs there was extremely good with a great fixed menu on in the evening with a good choice of dishes at a very reasonable price. The other restaurants in the little square were also good.

The hotel itself was very clean, had a lovely breakfast room with a good choice of items for breakfast with, most mornings, (except for Sundays), really lovely croissants.

I really loved this hotel. I found the staff friendly and helpful. The room was small, but clean, and had all of the amenities I needed (I was traveling for pleasure, not business). The wifi worked fine for me both in my room and in the dining room.

The location of this hotel is perfect - an easy walk to the old town and Place Bellecour. For me, it was the perfect home base for my short visit in Lyon.

The hotel is old, which isn't in itself a bad thing. The prices are good for the location. The stairs work better than the elevator and the front desk personnel isn't the best or friendliest. It's not as charming as we'd hoped, and the rooms are very very small. We were here for 8 days, mixing business and pleasure, and it was too cramped for that long a stay. On the upside, the location is phenomenal. It was so easy to get to Metro, easy to walk to many areas and the evenings are quiet, even in this inner-city hotel.
