“Swanky, but some problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We traveled to Lyon for Valentines day 2012 and stayed at Cour des Loges as part of our Small Luxury Hotels membership. We found it wonderful, but also perplexing in some ways...

Wonderful:
- Concierge service... top notch! We were so well taken care of.
- Breakfast was delicious and many steps above what we expected from a complimentary service
- Their wine cellar and sommelier... we had a private tasting that was again complimentary. Superb!

Perplexing:
- Our room had a private entrance and patio, which would have been lovely any other time of year, but in February was cold and slightly inconvenient
- Our bathroom had a detachable shower head, but inside a jacuzzi... the sides were open which was awkward when trying to bathe. We ended up accidentally spraying water on the floor until we became more adept at its use.
- The worst was when we went to check-out. The woman at the front desk wasn't able to swipe our cards. Instead of letting us know that it was a problem with their internet connection (which apparently happens somewhat frequently?) she made us go to a close by ATM to withdraw cash for the entire weekend. This was embarrassing, and if we hadn't checked out with an hour to spare it would have made us miss our flight back home.

I would have given this 4 stars based on the rest of our experience, but our check-out experience drops it to 3.

We are glad your stay at Cour des Loges went well overall.
What happened during your check out is totally abnormal and we are going to take the necessary steps to avoid that this kind of incident ever happens again.

My husband and I stayed here for 7 nights during a 5 week driving holiday in France. The hôtel is in old Lyon and difficult to access by car so it is absolutely essential to contact the hôtel and get detailled instructions on how to access the street which is only accessible by coded control of a pop up bollard. Better still, don't drive there; take the TGV to Lyons and cab it the rest of the way, as driving in Lyon is a nightmare for a first time. Valet parking is €35 per night.

The hôtel is well located in the quiet part of the city in a converted building. We had a junior suite leading onto the garden which was very spacious with a comfortable bed, but I thought the furnishings and décor a bit tacky, certainly not to the standard of other luxury hôtels I have stayed in in France. The quality of the workmanship of the internal fit out was poor, and the finishings are faux; it's the only hôtel I have stayed in with grey baths and toilets, no doubt for the good reason that they are really ugly! The painted unicorn mural behind the bed just made me laugh! The bar is very expensive, so avoid it, and we didn't try the restaurant which is said to be Michelin rated as we had had enough of haute cuisine, and wanted to try the local bouchons, of which there were many, all reasonably priced. You Will however be close to all the sites of which there are many.

The best thing about this hôtel is the staff, particularly the best concierge I have ever encountered, an older gentleman who guided us by phone to the hôtel; I wish I had gotten his name to thank him personally as he was only there one night, but if you are reading this you know who you are, you're the best!

Room Tip: Expansive but very central. Best concierge in France

This is kind of unusual to see our guests stay for seven nights in Lyon. We are pleased you took the time to discover our city.
But on the other hand, we are sorry that some of our decorations didn't suit you.
Gérard, our head concierge, and his team are glad you appreciated their advices.

From the moment I walked through the door everything was fantastic!! Gerard was so helpful and arranged some fantastic restaurants at very short notice!! Dining in the hotel was also a pleasure and the restaurants ambiance was something special. The cocktail bar was very relaxed and the staff were very attentive yet discrete. Can't recommend the hotel enough! I have previously stayed elsewhere in Lyon but will only be returning here. Many thanks for the exceptional service and a great stay. Greg Dublin

As we can read earlier, sometimes clients happen to be disappointed in the hotel.

We were put up at Cour des Loges by Auto Venture who arranged our time in Burgundy. After spending almost an hour trying to find the hotel (had GPS in the vehicle) I finally walked around until I found it down a street that didn't allow vehicles (except with a pass code from the hotel). The staff was good, helpful and pleasant. However, when we were taken to our room it was not at all up to our expectations. We had paid for a "Superior Room" and if this room was superior, I would hate to be placed in a regular room. We had been traveling in Europe for 4 weeks and this was our last night. Since the room was prepaid we had to stay. If it had not been prepaid we would have gone to another hotel.

Room Tip: Don't believe that a "Superior" room is going to be a nice room with a separate bath...

We do understand that our Venitian room (superior room) didn't meet your expectations.
If you had let us know your discontent and if we didn't have any other room available, then we would have send you to a hotel more fitted.

Had a great 2-night stay at this very unique hotel. As others have mentioned, they took 4 old buildings in the historic district and created one hotel. As such, each room is very different. Ours happened to have a bathtub in the very middle of the room and the shower was next to it, which was a bit strange (I could lay on the bed and reach the tub), but it was only problematic when one of us needed to get ready, since I was there with a friend and not for a "couple's stay". We could have asked to move rooms, but it wasn't a big enough deal to try and move all of our stuff somewhere else. Nor did it detract from the stay. Just made for a funny story to tell our other friends...

Rooms were a little dark, but once we figured out how to work the lights (another comdedy of errors), we were good to go. Just needed to have every single one of them on to have enough light to see.

All of the staff were great and the location was perfect. Overall, a wonderful stay. Would stay there again.

Getting to Cour des Loges is a challenge; they did say it is in a pedestrian area but, if you are driving, you really need the hotel to give you the access code and detailed directions to guide you through the pedestrian area where it is located. We are upgraded to a duplex room in this very old building - actually 4 combined. It is eclectic in that there is a bathtub on the upper sleeping area, but the bathroom as well as a shower are downstairs on the living room floor. Gerard, the delightful concierge is helpful in every way, and maps out an excellent walking tour for us. Cour des Loges is in the old city, which has been renovated, but it quite touristy. It also is a bit on the expensive side (€318.30 + valet parking).
