“Wet and dry”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

This museum is good for anyone who is interested in Gallo-Roman history. You enter the museum foyer and go down into the lower levels to view the exhibits and return via a lift. The displays are very good, especially the mosaics, but even as an interested party I found the information a bit dry and by the lower level I was really ready to leave. It is also the first museum I have ever visited where the ceiling was leaking water close to the ancient exhibits. The exposed grey cement walls, dark spaces and this dripping water reminded me of a shopping centre car park. There is a small gift/book shop at the foyer, with nothing worth mentioning. After a visit to the amazing basilica up the hill, this space was a bit of a let-down.

“Old-fashioned museum has some good items”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

This old-fashioned museum, built in a brutalist style, has some interesting artifacts but overall suffers from an old fashioned, didascalic presentation.

“I'm not one for looking in glass cases but...”

Brilliant amphitheatres to look at and the mosiacs are beautiful inside too. The audio guide (included in the price - unusually) really brought it all to life

“Innovative design and outstanding collection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

High rating fully deserved. We took advantage of the free entry on Thursdays, but actually had trouble finding the place as the unique design of the museum is that it is buried in a hillside and almost invisible from the outside - very easy to overlook, especially since one's attention goes automatically to the adjacent restored Roman amphitheater. A smiling employee dressed all in red met us on the path, informed us (without being asked) that it was free entry day, and pointed us back to the museum entrance we had walked right past. Staff inside the museum were also unusually helpful and communicative. The visit to the museum is a very direct way to get in touch with the rich history and strong influence of the Roman presence in Lyon and the area, and enables one to make more sense of the architectural feel of the city, even in new buildings, and the character of the people.

“Surprisingly varied in its exhibits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

I'm actually not a great fan of Roman relics but this museum which spans about five levels has an impressive range of antiquities. There is a huge range of carved and inscribed stones of every sort but also artefacts from every aspect of Roman/Gallic life, including beautiful glass objects, statues, jewellery etc. The museum has an impressive number of mosaic floors, some of them very extensive. There are also large windows which look out over the remains of the two antique theatres. Our visit was free as part of the Lyon visitor pass.
