The Basilica is in a spectacular position and is visible from all over Lyon so a visit is well worth the trip up the Fourviere Hill. Inside is delightful and quite restrained for a 19th century building, the colours of the mosaics and paintings are lovely. The view is spectacular, from Croix Rousse to the confluence of the Saone & Rhone, incorporating different architectural styles. Be warned though; the facilities for are eating are not good. A poor bar selling coffee, baguettes and plus drinks and the Basilica Restaurant that stops serving coffee at 10.30 on Sunday mornings. BUT the rest is worth it. Take the funicular up from Vieux Lyon and walk down.
