“What a shame....very poor chalet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

What a shame. This chalet has all the potential of being outstanding, located metres from the main lifts and beautiful panoramic views.
However, it is simply not good value for money. It's outdated, dirty and in desperate need of investment. The chalet has not been touched since the 70's. The living room has only comfy seats for three people, yet the chalets sleeps six. Surely a comfy sofa is MUST after a hard days skiing? The TV is from the 80's and only a works with DVD's (non provided). The bedrooms are spacious, but the bathrooms a joke, our bathroom had tiles falling from the skirting board and a shower that the head was positioned so high and at such an angle that it simply sprayed the bathroom. We spent a week holding the hose so, not to soak the bathroom.
The noise from streets went on all night and meant that with even with ear plugs, it was very difficult to sleep.
One highlight was the food, Ali, our host did a great job to produce the food from the spacious but grimy, basic kitchen.
The senior rep, was of poor standard and offered no value to our trip. The staff were generally very amateur.
So, in summary, spend your cash somewhere else. We had a great holiday, the skiing was super, the food good, but the chalet was very poor. We paid £850 for a week, if I had spent £500, then I am sure I would been a lot more accepting of the chalets poor standard.

We have noted the comments made by ‘Anna799’ and regret that they were disappointed with aspects of the Chalet Jean Blanc, which has featured in our programme since 2008 and has been well-received by our guests. As we have advised previously, we do work closely with our chalet owners to ensure that the chalets that we offer are continually updated wherever necessary to ensure our guests’ comfort. It is disappointing that ‘Anna799’ has noted some specific details that appear to require attention, which will be addressed.
Our staff are recruited for their roles on the basis of their demonstrated skills and past experience, the team in Courchevel 1850 being no exception. Feedback to date has been highly complimentary of the Chalet Hosts and Resort Representative, who have been rated almost entirely as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ by guests, as has the chalet catering.

Chalet Jean Blanc, Courchevel 1850. I am writing this from Geneva airport having this morning left Courchevel and a week staying in Chalet Jean Blanc, organised by SkiTotal.
We had checked trip advisor before we left so had an idea that the chalet would not be 4* as advertised. The location is fantastic, no denying it, bang in the centre of Courchevel 1850, above Jean Blanc Sports, opposite The Forum (with lots of shops), 2 minutes walk from Ku De Ta (good après bar) and best of all, right across the road from the main lift station (Chenus, Verdons and Jardin Alpin). As expected the downside of this meant it was rather noisy at night (especially as the chalet is pretty warm so you need to sleep with the balcony doors open). We bought ear plugs in the Sherpa (supermarket in the forum) and they worked great.
The chalet is in need of an update. We had 2 door handles fall off over the course of a week and the furnishings are a bit old. The living room is not spacious as described on the website with an old sofa that can seat 3 and everyone else is on wooden chairs. The view is very good though - right onto the piste.
At first glance the website says the rooms are en suite. Read closer and it says each room has a shower (2 over strange mini baths with seats - however these do prove quite handy when hungover...) and there are 2 separate toilets for the 3 rooms to share. In my book, en suite means you get a loo. This could easily be fixed as room 1 had a bidet in the shower room which could be replaced with a loo. Who has a bidet without a loo next to it anyway?!
Our chalet host was lovely (Ally) and made a real effort to ensure we were thoroughly well fed and well wined. The cakes were also a particular highlight. The kitchen is in a pretty bad way so hats off to Ally for managing to turn out such good food. Cupboards are missing doors, the dishwasher doesn't work properly and everything seemed a bit greasy so we generally tried to avoid venturing inside.
So if the owners are reading this I would recommend spending a bit of cash on your chalet: double glazing, a new kitchen table, a new dishwasher and general deep clean of the kitchen, exchange the bidet for a toilet and chuck a big L shaped sofa in the living room. Job done.
So to summarise, chalet in great location but in need of an update. I would say 2* for the chalet, 4* for our chalet host. Would not recommend for families or clean freaks who want peace and quiet. Great for young groups who prioritise location to the action. Oh and remember the ear plugs!

The comments that the reviewer has made in relation to the accommodation have been noted and it is disappointing that they experienced a few shortcomings during their stay which have since been referred to our Maintenance Team to address. Similarly, we will of course be discussing any perceived refurbishment requirements with the chalet owners, as we endeavour to do at the end of each ski season, in a bid to continually improve our properties for our guests.
It is pleasing that the reviewer enjoyed a great many aspects of their stay and the service received from their Chalet Host. The Jean Blanc is indeed in an enviable location and one which offers many benefits to the keen skier wishing to make the most of their time in the resort.

A little nervous to book into Chalet Jean Blanc with the only review on Trip Advisor being less than satisfactory from 3 years ago – but we took a gamble and were pleasantly surprised. As a group of 5 friends – We could not have found a more convenient and comfortable place to stay. The lifts are only 20m away from the chalet and the views from any bedroom/lounge is magnificent. All rooms are almost identical each with its own “bathroom” and there are 2 separate toilets for the chalet, which was not a problem as we were one group.
The décor and bathrooms are definitely outdated and could do with a spruce up, but without this, we can still confirm the accommodation as being above average. Wi Fi was a real winner for all us facebook loving South Africans, Just a pity Ski Total could not have some DVDs to use/rent for those lazy evenings. Travelling such long distances with limited baggage allowance , would mean that a hairdryer in the chalet would also be more than welcomed.
Disappointing that none of the staff could give any real value info on the area and key places to go/be at, and a general info pack on personal experience where to go would be great. Our Chalet Girl was very new but she did a great job at making us feel comfortable and accommodating our fussy food requests. Wine is included with the meals but ice and Beer are not, which is extremely disappointing for the guys..... We all agree, if we went back to Courchevel – We would request Chalet Jean Blanc again

We stayed at Chalet Jean Blanc as a family group and we found it to be comfortable if a little dated. It is clean and presentable. It is in a superb location opposite the main lift system and in the heart of the village. The bathrooms and toilets are separate but this did not pose a problem. There is only enough soft seating for five and always one adult was sitting on the floor which is not ideal. There is plenty of room for an extra sofa which would solve this problem. The wifi system worked well and the DVD player a bonus. We travelled with Ski Total and we would describe the food as adequate - fresh fruit and fresh coffee along with local French bread/ pain au chocolate/ croissants would improve this rating. The staff were helpful and friendly. The transfers were slick and relatively short.

The blurb for this chalet-apartment focuses heavily on its location just yards from the piste in the heart of high-end Courchevel 1850. There's no argument there — guests have a fabulous grandstand view over the snowy Croisette, the well-stocked ski-hire shop is just downstairs and great restaurants are virtually on the doorstep — but sadly little else about Chalet Jean Blanc lives up to its billing.

This chalet is promoted as a four-star/snowflake enterprise, and while we know from experience that these rating systems can be somewhat fanciful, we were still hugely disappointed to find the accommodation more on a par with a dated two-star B&B in the UK.

The sitting room is not "spacious" — in fact it's rather small with soft seating for only five (at a squeeze) of the six guests. Some clever wording about bedrooms "with ensuite bath/shower" means the operator, Ski Total, is off the hook when you arrive to discover that not only does your ensuite lack a loo, but the two loos in the corridor (which we'd imagined were additional) must be shared between the three double rooms. The decor and furnishings date mostly from the 1950s to 1970s, which you'd shrug off if the place were spotless. But having paid £27 pw extra for a proper bath (the other rooms having hip baths), we found the tub so grimy that the holiday began with a trip to the supermarket to buy a scourer to get it somewhere close to acceptable. Fellow guests embarked on a similar mission to descale their showerhead. Cracked tiles, broken lightbulbs and Anaglypta wallpaper are pretty much the order of things here.

What about the food? The website mentions fresh fruit for breakfast, aperitifs before dinner, and coffee with chocolates/mints afterwards — none of which materialised for us. Until we complained, the coffee we did get (with breakfast and afternoon tea) was instant. They also talk about local bread and croissants; local perhaps to France but brought to you via the freezer compartment, which is a travesty when there are boulangeries in the town. Many of the vegetables served with this "high standard cuisine" also come from frozen value packs by brands such as Top Budget. The fruit juice is from concentrate. The kitchen itself was always tidy but it desperately needs replacing — or failing that a good scrub.

Generally the place is poorly equipped. For a similar price (we paid £850 each for the week), we've stayed in chalets with facilities such as TV, stereo, internet connection, hot-tub, honesty bar, boot-warmers, hairdryers etc. Any one item from this list would have lifted our spirits tremendously. Even some complimentary shower gel would probably have done it. But this was not to be.

What's more (or less), most of us couldn't sleep for the noise, first from next door Bar Le Jump, which keeps going till 1am, then from clubbers passing under the window through to about 4.30am, and finally the street-cleaners and piste-bashers who begin work around 5am. You can't change the apartment's location, and for reasons given in the first paragraph you wouldn't want to, but whereas nearby Chalet Porthos suggests prospective guests might wish to bring earplugs, Ski Total remains silent on the subject of the clearly unavoidable din.

There were some brighter points: the vegetarian dinners were pretty good, the homemade cakes were very good, and the bedding looked new and (apart from a washed-in bloodstain on a spare pillow) clean.

Bottom line: it's fine to be retro but cleanliness and a few little luxuries should be non-negotiable.
