“Bed Bugs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Stayed there February 2012. Nice staff, good food, decent rooms, good place to put your ski stuff and relatively close to the slopes. However, I woke up to my arms, legs, and face covered in itchy bed bug bites. The staff was able to change my room but I decided to change hotels entirely. They refunded me for the night that I didn't stay there but there was no other compensation. They tried to tell me that it wasn't a bed bug problem but once you are bitten overnight it's quite obvious where it came from. Unfortunate because the place was quite cute. Really wanted to like the hostel.

Nice rooms, cool building and great location. Vagabond is everything you can expect from a good value hostel. Free wifi, free buscards and a continental breakfast adds to the positive experience, and the bar was a good start-of-place before heading into town. Would come back to Vagabond!

Before going to Chamonix and staying the the Vagabond I read some of the previous reviews and thought: 'This seems ok, what can have changed since the reviews were written last year?'.

A lot seems to have changed.
Many others say the place was clean and warm. It most certainly was not.
The bedrooms were freezing at night, and very dirty. We were provided with bed clothes and blankets and the blankets most certainly had not been washed. The showers were also filthy.

I understand that it is a budget accomodation, but cleanliness should not be comprimised in my eyes.

If you are going there in a group, try to book 1 of the 2 the bedrooms on the top floor. They are relatively spacious and you have some storage space. All other bedrooms have zero storage space and nowhere to lock valuables. You simply get a bunkbed and a sink, and have no room for anything else. However, there is storage outside for your ski equipment.

The bar is a small cosy place with a big screen for sport if there is a game on. The bar-staff are really friendly. There is a decent variety of well priced drinks too.
There is no place to chill out and watch TV in the evening. You are either in the bar or in your bunkbed.
The food is what you would expect from budget accomodation, including a continental breakfast (corn flakes & plain bread rolls with jam).

The location is quite good in relation to the cente of town. It is 5 - 8 minutes walk.
However, it is 30+ mins bus ride to the best ski areas. (Le Tour & Grand Montetes).

There is 1 ski area that is 10-15 minute walk away but it not one of the better ones.

Yes it is probably one of the cheapest places to stay in Chamonix at approx 50 euro a night. You get what you pay for.

Room Tip: if you are in a group, try get the room on the top floor that has some storage space and single (non...

We stayed in Le Vagabond with a group of 4 friends during our annual ski mountaineering trip. The "Gite" (hostel) is a good place to stay if you are budget conscious and don't mind bunk beds and shared rooms. The building has character, and the stone walls suggest that the building is hundreds of years old. The views from the balcony on Mt Blanc and other mountains was stunning, and the bar was lively every night, although we didn't spend any time there as we were there to climb and ski. The hotel offers free WIFI.

Room Tip: Room 5 has great views from the balcony

Wasnt sure what to expect but 6 of us took a dorm and were perfectly comfortable. The bar serves cheap beer for two hours every night as well as live sport. The staff are friendly and the food, included in the price we paid., was excellent value. Would 100% recommend to those travelling to Chamonix with a strict budget.

A great place for the cost conscious traveler or person who wants to meet fellow people. a kind of chalet for those with less pennies or who hate children!!

Stayed in the private ensuite room which despite having very limited headroom (it is a converted attic space) was really top notch for a hostel. Only banged my head 3 times badly in 5 days :) It was more like having your own little apartment than a room. 1 draw back is that you must have a bath not a shower as there isn't enough headroom. Sounds inconvenient but when you have been boarding all day, a bath is great.

Bar downstairs is always full of a crowd coming and going.

Only criticism is the 1/2 board price structure. you get dinner (single course with no drink) and breakfast consists of just cereal and some juice. I dont drink milk some breakfast became a non event and the missus didn't bother most of the time either. 25 Euros per person (with is the uplift price for the 1/2 board - compulsory) buys a damn good 3 course meal in France - in fact you could get a reasonable 2 course dinner with drink for 15 Euros in Chamonix and have 10 euros to spend on an amazing breakfast before you ski/board.

Cost conscious people will always find fault with the pricing structure . I would happily pay a little more for the room/bed than feel I am not getting 25 Euros worth of my 1/2 board.
The overall price I can live with (132 Euros for 2 people for private room + 1/2 board), the 50 Euros assigned to the food I can not.

Anyway, perhaps nit picking, because at the end of the day, I think it was good value for money compared to other options

BTW, the quality of the dinner was 5* every night but I could get the same meal for 12/13 Euros at most places.

I'll be back for sure

The gite is easy to find, with the centre of Chamonix, just 5 minutes walk away. The girls working there are very helpful and the bar downstairs has an amazing array of drinks to be had. A lot of the locals are regulars which is always a good sign. The bedroom we were in was very clean and beautifully decorated, although I did have to remember to duck under beam sometimes!! I will definitely be going back - it's one of those places you can go anytime of year and have a good time.
