“Reasonable hotel, awful after-care”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

Decent hotel, although it is a bit removed from the lifts.

However, the staff have been incredibly annoying in terms of addressing my request for a copy of my bill (which was given to a travel companion, despite it being charged to my card). I was initially told it would take 5 mins. After about an hour, I called back and was told it would take an hour. Several hours have now passed. I am still without my paperwork, and the staff are now refusing to commit to any sort of timescale. The staff seriously need a good talking to, because they are far too relaxed about their jobs.

To give a further example: I needed a transfer from the hotel to Geneva airport, so I asked the hotel to arrange this (surely, this is a simple task?). The person helping me gave me only a list of phone numbers for me to call from my UK phone. Two of the numbers did not work (no reply) and another was written down incorrectly by the person helping me. In the end, I had to sort it out completely on my own. Really amateurish.

In summary:
If you are in Chamonix to Ski - stay somewhere else or go to another resort area - it takes a minimum of one hour to get from hotel to slope - on a good day if transport is on time and not too crowded.

Mercure Chamonix Centre is a very nice hotel - if you are going to Chamonix for any reason other than to go skiing every day as we did for 7 days.

Good stuff:
The hotel is neat, clean, comfortable beds, warm rooms, fairly helpful staff, ski lockers. All good. Great central location to dozens of restaurants, bars and small supermarkets which are reasonably priced.

Bad:
Hotel is advertised as having a "free Ski Shuttle". This is why we picked this hotel, as we knew Chamonix was not a ski-in resort and you needed transport to get to the slopes and we assumed this meant the hotel had a little bus to drive you around as some of them are 9km away.
Turns out all you get is free public transport bus passes (which are included in your Chamonix Ski pass anyway) to use the public transport service to get to the slopes.
Sound OK? How about this. The fastest time we got our feet on the snow was 1 hour and 10 minutes door to slope. One day it took me 2 hours and 35 minutes to get home from Les Houches which is only 9km away...
The shortest time we waited for a bus in the freezing cold was 15 minutes (they were never on time), the longest 90 minutes. The buses ran every 70 minutes, so you didnt want to miss one. An absolute shambles.
The buses were so full, at least half the people got left behind, and if you were lucky enough to get on, you were wedged against dozens of others, barely able to breathe for up to 35 minutes depending on which slope you are heading for.

So while this hotel is next to the train station, this is only useful to get transfers to Geneva or the train. The bus stop is about 500m away from the hotel (in ski boots!) and there are dozens of hotels closer to the bus stops for getting to the slopes.

There has got to be an easier way than this to enjoy the snow. Will be looking to another ski resort for my next trip, wasting two hours every day getting to and from the skiing is ridiculous!

Room Tip: Look for one as close to the bus stops as possible - like Hotel Alpinus for example

I don't know where to start the hotel was amazing the staff were fantastic and it's all set in a picture perfect landscape. I can not wait for my next visit. The town itself looks like something from a James Bond movie. You need to see it with your own eyes. Thank guys see you soon

1. Very good and central location- just away from the train and the center of Chamonix.
2. Room and facilities are in very good condition and shape.
3. Breakfast is quite expensive and you rather go to one of the nearby restaurants.
4. Price was reasonable
5. Service was friendly good and efficient.
6. Overall feeling –would I come back –yes.

Room Tip: very good place to stay in Chamonix

There is not one bad thing I can say about this property. The person that is able to complain about this property is somebody I would never want to travel with anyway. So instead of picking a new hotel, it will be easier and more rewarding to choose someone else to go with.

We stayed more through a miscommunication with a fellow traveller rather then by choice and wish we had not. While the location is good for the centre of Chamonix that is the only reason to stay here. We pre-paid for a view of Mont Blanc and were then put on the second floor where we could not see the mountain. We stayed for four nights and twice the towels that were delivered to our room smelt terrible, like they had been washed in very dirty water. Breakfast, to rather the lack of it was another issue. On three of the mornings the hotel had tour groups staying who ate nearly everything before we arrived to eat and as we were on a schedule and could not wait until the tour group left we were left with very little choice. The staff did apologise but they could do very little. On the fourth morning there were not any tour groups and breakfast was totally different, there was even a chef to cook eggs and crêpes for us. Our experience of staying here would have been very different if this had occurred each morning.

Well placed in the centre of Chamonix within easy walking distance of the lift to Mt Blanc, the railway station, town centre and shops. Breakfast is usually very busy as it's quite a larger hotel and the bacon is awful :) but that aside it's a very pleasant base hotel to tour the area or pop into southern Switzerland and pay a visit to Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). Close to the Mt. Blanc Tunnel and Italy as well of course. The rooms are very well appointed and some have staggering views onto Mt. Blanc which has one of the best sunset spectacles I've ever witnessed.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms are the best, especially ones facing Mt. Blanc.
