I first visited Chamonix 12 years ago and fell in love with the whole area immediately. I have been back a further 4 times and each time it fills me with excitement. The scenery is so spectacular and ( so long as the clouds are not so low down) you cannot stop looking skyward to the peaks of the Mont Blanc range. I have visited more remote areas in the French and Swiss alps which have very spectacular scenery as well but the good thing about Chamonix is it's access from the uk. Fly to Geneva and with in an hour you are sitting outside a cafe enjoying stunning views Mont Blanc. There is plenty to do whether you hike, bike, rock climb, ski, mountaineer or just take gentle strolls and relax. It has everything for all year although things slow down between seasons, some services close but most things are open. Plenty of choice of places to stay. Prices in Chamonix can seem a bit expensive but look around and you can find cafe's and restaurants which fairly priced. If you want your first taste of the alpine life them Chamonix and Mont Blanc will undoubtedly wet your appetite. I love it.
