“Charming hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2009

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights last week. It is in the most beautiful location in old Annecy. We stayed in room 203 which had a balcony and looked down on the canal. The people who owned the hotel and their staff, were kind, friendly and helpful. Delightful hotel, delightful people in a perfect location and we will definitely return.

The location of this hotel in old Annecy was good and our room was clean and nice. We had an upstairs corner room which offered two windows overlooking the old prison and waterway below. The hotel staff seemed very indifferent to us which was disappointing. I liked the town and the lake is beautiful. We rented bikes and rode around the lake. I would stay elsewhere next time.

Pros:
-This hotel has hands down the best location if you want to explore old town Annecy. It is smack dab in the middle of everything.
-We stayed in their nicest room and it was great- beautiful huge windows, views of the castle and the lake, a little balcony and a comfy bed.
-All the staff was very nice and professional.

Con:
-It's a very old building so the windows have no soundproofing. We could hear the kids loitering around at night. Also they collect the trash for all the surrounding restaurants right outside the hotel. It sounds like a diesel truck was parked in the middle of the room. Very loud!

If you want to stay in Annecy, this is the place! But if you are not a night owl or a light sleeper, I would recommend earplugs.

I had chosen this hotel based on the positive reviews received on this site and the room looked nice on the website.

As it was a belated honeymoon and my husbands birthday I decided to push the boat out and I booked their second best room - best room already booked. It was awful. It was totally overpriced - €225 per night.

We had intended staying for there for our entire visit but moved out on the Friday. Room was ok size but really shabby, warn carpets, tiny bath, wooden flooring had gaps in it, blinds outside window kept banging against window frame and this combined with the street noise - bin lorries, late night revellers, etc meant we got very little sleep, The lift had a terrible smell which we think was from the drains.

The staff on the desk were completely disinterested in us - barely a bon jour between them and when we told them about the noisy room they said there was nothing they could do.

Breakfast was not worth the money - however the breakfast lady was the friendliest person at the hotel and made a huge effort to communicate with us even though she had no english. We had a much nicer breakfast in a local cafe in the market. It nearly ruined our long awaited holiday had we not found a complete oasis of luxury and calm in Talloires.

The only positive about the hotel is that it is central.

My husband and I spent the weekend in Annecy and chose the Palais Hotel because we we looking for a central location at a cheap(ish) rate.

We were pleasantly surprised at the amazing location. Really, it's smack-dab in the middle of town and even the side rooms have nice views of the old town below. As some people have mentioned, however, it's VERY difficult to find. We finally parked in a paid lot, walked to the hotel, checked in, and decided to just carry our luggage the few blocks to the hotel instead of trying to drive - I might suggest you do the same.

The room was small and somewhat awkward, and our TV set had a weird buzzing sound sometimes, but everything was quite clean and the bed was comfy.

Service was just OK. The women working at the front desk weren't terribly outgoing, but they were polite enough, and gave us information when we needed it. They also comped us a free 30-minute Internet card, so that was nice!

The only weird thing that happened was that they took the really comfy duvet cover off after the first night, and then the covers were sort of scratchy. But all in all, no big deal.

A great bonus is the farmer's market held right near the hotel on Sundays. Make sure to go.

The one big downside? THE NOISE. This hotel has paper-thin walls and you can hear every conversation from adjacent rooms. Fortunately, our neighbors were quiet.

All in all, the price for this hotel is great, and we'd definitely stay again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2009

We visited Annecy for 2 nights in February for a short break to explore the region, combining our trip with a 1 night visit to Montreux in Switzerland. Annecy was a quick 30min drive from Geneva airport on the new motorway (though it took us 75mins to queue up for our pre-booked hire car - half term madness!). We found the hotel very easily, using the pdf map downloaded from the hotel's website. We parked in the Hotel de Ville underground car park which is very close by - we dragged our cases from there. We don't think there is any need to drive into the old town to drop off bags before parking as the hotel was visible from the main road and only 2mins walk from the car park. Just make sure you get a discount car park ticket from hotel reception for a cheap overnight rate.
We had booked a "prestige" room (203) with balcony and canal view which was delightful - see photos. Bit pricey though, at 138 euros per night, given the pound exchange rate! The room itself was small though pleasantly decorated - in fact so small that we had to put our suitcases under the sink in the smart, modern, spacious bathroom! However the only problem was no shower screen or curtain over the bath, so you could not avoid spraying water across the bathroom - so the suitcases got a bit damp!
Breakfast was in a smart modern room on 2nd floor with nice buffet selection of cold meats and cheeses along with fresh bread and pastries. The friendly waitress served hot drinks and orange or grapefruit juice.
In spite of the couple of shortcomings re the room, we found this to be a charming small hotel in an idyllic location. There are bars and restaurants right on your doorstep (we recommend Mamie Lise, virtually in sight of the hotel, by the church). We found the area very quiet, but it was obviously off season - very pretty in the snow though!
Annecy Lake is just a few steps away. We used Annecy as a base to dust off our skis and spent 2 afternoons in the nearby small but picturesque ski resort of La Clusaz, about 40mins drive.

Difficult to find made more difficult by a gal at the desk who had not developed a simple “find us” plan. But as the name suggests it is beside the palace on a little island in the canal. The hotel is basic at the edge of the lovely old town. The room was tiny with a small bed, AC and opening windows to a noisy street. There is a mini-bar and TV. For 75 Euros it was fine. It was clean without any luxury at all.
