“Interesting Chateau and Collection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2014

We arrived right at 2 pm (opening time) and were just in time for a guided tour...en francais. It would have been great if we spoke French. The booklet they gave us to follow along wasn't nearly as detailed as I would have liked. The woman giving the tour liked to talk, and it was a bit awkward because we couldn't understand much of what she was saying.

The tour ran a bit long (nearly 2 hours) and we had to ask to walk up to the top of the keep.

There is an amazing collection of antiques from the benefactor, but I would have liked to learn more history about the Count of Montrottier himself.

“Great castle close to Gorges du Fier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

After visiting the Gorges du Fier and have a nice lunch at the little restaurant close to the castle we decided to visit this one and we really enjoyed it. It's very well preserved and maintained (it's private) and the visit which lasts 1.5 hour takes you trough different rooms showing great collections of the late owner (the place belongs now to a historical society). You will see a pretty eclectic but very nice display of old weapons for middle age to Napoleon era. Nice exotic and Asian objects, etc. The piece de resistance is to climb to the top of the dungeon (87 steps) which will give you a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area. This is kid friendly and the lady who guided us was very good, patient and knowledgeable.

“Nice castle.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

There are many beautiful castles around Annecy, and this one is no exception.

It makes for a very nice day trip from Annecy, if you do not wish to stay in the city center.

It would probably be a good idea to combine visiting Chateau de Montrottier and Gorges du Fier, at the same time, as they are literally side by side.

The easiest way to get to the castle, would be to drive from Annecy. We rented a car for the day at a Hertz Rental, near the train station, which allowed us to venture from the city. From Annecy, we took "Route Cote la Dame", then turned right on "Route de Chavanod", then followed "Route des Gorges du Fier". There were signs along the way, but they were far apart, so we recommend google mapping it prior. Streets are quiet so no need to worry about getting lost and doing U-turns :). You will see parking for the gorge on the right, and then parking for the castle on the left, a little bit further down.

There were very few tourists around, most likely due to the inaccessibility of the castle without a car.

The grounds of the castle are beautiful and boast marvelous scenery of the countryside.

The only way to see the inside of the castle was to pay for a guided tour. There were tours every 30 minutes, in various languages. Since we had already scene Chateau de Menthon Saint-Bernard, we did not want to spend the extra 20Euro, to explore this castle. However, we highly doubt that it would disappoint.

Definitely have a look, or just drive up to the area, as we did, to take in the breathtaking scenery. It is a nice outing!

Happy travels!
