“Good home base, but not a luxury hotel”

St. Remy was perfect...it is centrally located for day trips around provence and the town itself is really special. There are many great restaurants and shops to browse through.

As for the hotel, I am torn. It's not spectacular by any means. Having traveled from the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat on the coast, we were underwhelmed to say the least. The positives are that the location is great...you can walk to the town during the day (if adventurous, even at night, but there is a portion of the walk that is not lit by street lights, so I did not walk after dark). Also, the restaurant at the hotel is decent. The hotel is just not that great. The rooms are clean, but the bed is hard...not comfy at all. The spa was closed for renovations while we were there, but we were not told until we checked in...and that also meant, no access to the exercise room, as well. The staff was pleasant enough, but certainly not tripping over themselves with hospitality. There were nice touches, like the champagne upon arrival and switching our room on request, but they pretty much left us alone otherwise. I realize this is not always a bad thing, but if you are looking for dining suggestions and help in general, I would suggest you inquire elsewhere. The cleaning staff was extremely accommodating and sweet.

I think this place is fine if you are not looking for a 4 or 5 star experience and just need a good, reliable place to call home base. However, when we return, I would consider renting a villa instead.

We stayed at this hotel for a week in september 2012. It was a pleasant stay, beautifull and clean room. It was at the back of the hotel but who cares.
Breakfast was excellent. Staff was ALWAYS friendly.
We will some day return and hope the service will be the same. We had a nice time !

We stayed at the hotel for two nights with a tour group. did not actually spend a lot of time at the hotel as we were out and about visiting the area. We had a great dinner here at the Michelin star restaurant. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Good choices, self service.

Were greeted by smiling staff upon arrival. Our room was modern and clean. Actually a nice change from the upscale hotels we have stayed in before on tours. Would stay there again if the opportunity arises.

Room Tip: I think that there may be some rooms not refurbished. Ours was and it was fine.

This hotel is known for its chef, who lives up to his reputation with an excellent 1 star restaurant and bistro. The staff is courteous and helpful, and the rooms modern in an attractive way. Ours had a balcony looking out at the Alpilles. Unfortunately, Valrugues is almost completely devoid of character, or charm. Especially in this part of the world a hotel must be more than a collection of rooms. Access to St Remy, the Luberon and Glanum are fine. However, when not running around Gordes, there is nothing available here other than a hotel room, which begins to take on the impression of a prison ward from a Solzhenitsyn novel after a few days The grounds are confined to a small pool area, there is one miniature and prosaic sitting room, the entrance foyer is a desk area with the feel of the half price ticket booth in Liecester Square, and the owners response - a local family I've been told - is to add more bed chambers Other reviews on this site adequately add to and reinforce the general impression I convey. I might only add, by all means come for the food, but stay at Chateau D'Alpilles. Please.

The loggia rooms are a quite compact and the junior suites are really not worth the extra money. Make sure you get a refurbished room - there are a few that need upgrading and are best avoided. The main restaurant is superb and to be highly recommended. The centre of St Remy is only a 10 min walk away if you want to go out for dinner and avoid drink driving. The pool is of sufficient size to swim lengths but the sun loungers can be hard to come in high season - mainly because selfish guests reserve a place before going out for the day in order to ensure they can catch some rays upon return. Drink service by the pool could be improved - one often had to hunt down a waiter. There is an excellent large screen TV which was great for the Olympics! All the staff were friendly and helpful and really went the extra mile. Penelope was particularly outstanding.

We stayed 2 nights in this expensive hotel which we choose because they have a good "restaurant gastronomique" but .....it was full for dinner during our stay because of a seminar !
nothing special, no view, no character, no charm ....but efficient staff.

We had spent two weeks in Provence and were looking for a special hotel in which to spend our final night before getting the plane back to Southampton. First impressions good: porter immediately helped us with our baggage and reception staff took us to our room. The foyer does not have a five star "wow, this looks good!" appeal being somewhat cramped. Corridor leads eventually to the excellent outside pool passing bar and TV room; there is a lounge to the left of reception with a pool table, which rather defeats the purpose of a lounge in our view. Lift very small though the big mirror attempts to make it look bigger. (Indoor pool much smaller than outdoor.)
We had a junior suite facing the trees at back of the hotel which was fine for us because we had had enough heat for a while. With no real view to compensate, the room was hardly five star quality. "Suite" is overdoing it a bit: large sofa perhaps an attempt to turn it into a suite but limited space available. The bathroom had seen better days. However, bed very comfortable.
So, on to dinner, in the bistrot which in summer when the weather is fine is tucked away at the end of the large outdoor Michelin star restaurant. (I have just realised that part of the underwhelming foyer experience was the fact that the indoor bistrot is just to the right of the main door and looked very out-of-season, which of course it was but it makes the area look a bit run down.) The hotel has no apparent "heart" to it and some thought needs to be given to this in our view.
The meal made up for it, however. Reasonably priced and excellently served by a knowledgeable waiter who realised my wife did not speak French and therefore addressed her in excellent English. The fourth overall rating "blob" has been awarded in recognition of his excellence. (Hotel, please check who it was serving in the bistrot on 8 September and act appropriately.)
And guess who brought our breakfast to our room the following morning!!
So, in summary, not a bad experience but that fifth star looks a bit tarnished. To make a comparison we will try to get to their hotel at Gordes one day, but will of course check with Tripadvisor first.

(Note to Tripadvisor - you rapped me on the knuckles in relation to my report on the Premier Inn near Southampton airport on the day before we left for Avignon, saying I hadn't written enough so I hope this report puts me nearer the top of the class.)

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are cool and quiet but you may have to pay for extra space.
