“A Good but not Great Meal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012 via mobile

After reading all the reviews we wanted to give it a try for ourselves. We're glad we did but it wasn't one of the more memorable dinners in our week in St-Remy. The food was good, I had the risotto with scallops and shrimp, my wife had the gnocchi with large gambas (shrimp). We initially thought the portions were small but both meals were very filling so size ended up to be just right. We didn't have a reservation and were seated in the back dining room in front of the bar area. It was near the kitchen doors but wasn't a problem for us - it was a bit cold that night so we were fine to be inside. We had a bottle of local wine which was great and tiramisu for dessert. While the food was good service was quite rushed even though there was no one waiting for our able when we left after 9pm. We were served in 20 mins but to give credit we were not rushed to leave after we were done and had to ask for the check. A good but not great meal. We much better enjoyed L'Industrie and L'Olivade.

“Sadly, a poor meal”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

We ate dinner at Bistro des Alpillees in mid August. It is worth mentioning that they were quite busy, but I don't feel that should excuse a generally poor meal. When our party of four arrived, there were no tables available but the host took our name and asked us to return in 30 minutes. All fine. We did so, and then waited another 30 minutes to be seated. Somewhat annoying, but had the meal been any good, it wouldn't have mattered. After we were seated, we waited more than 20 minutes for a waitress to come to our table. After 15, I went over to the host and said we were very thirsty, could someone please come over and take drink orders. >5 min later, waitress arrives, we explain that we are very thirsty and order water and some drinks, and it takes another ten minutes to bring the water. Not good.

My wife and I ordered salads and then a whole roast chicken. The salads were fine - nothing memorable, but fine. The chicken - uggh. Seems like a standard Provence dish, and one you would expect to be done well in a nice French bistro. Ours was very overcooked, dry, and relatively tasteless. No crisp flavorful skin, no juicy meat. I've had much better from the hot table at our local supermarket. The rest of our party's meals were not much better. Service was friendly, but very very slow (even for France) and unable to keep up with the number of tables.

We ate less than 1/2 the chicken. The waitress asked us if it was okay, and we told her that it was overcooked and dry. She said sorry, but that is all that came of it.

I had high hopes, but would not return.

“Fabulous lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

Two weeks in France and had one of our best meals here. Grilled calamari - excellent! It has a <3 next to it on the menu, which means its a specialty of the house. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, excellent house wine from the region. Highly recommend!

“Great food in a comfortable Provencal setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

This is the kind of restaurant that is SO typical of small Provencal towns: a picturesque outdoor cafe with solid local cuisine and great service. Our waiter MADE the experience with an interesting story about the wine, helpful recommendations on the menu and timely service. Bistrot des Alpilles may not bill itself as 5 star cuisine, but the food & atmosphere were excellent. We would go back in a heart beat!

“Shopping and a well deserved lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

After hours walking around the delightful little village, we were ready to relax and have a glass of wine. We found Alpilles on the Boulevard Mirabeau and sat inside at a tall table. The atmosphere was lively and our lunch of pizza, salad and wine gave us the energy to head back to the walk way just as the Wednesday market day venders were beginning to pack up. Nice place.
