“A good gay guest house, friendly owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2008

My friend and I stayed at BnB Les Amis in November 2007 for 2 nights for approximately 85€ plus 10€ per night for parking in the garage. Note that the owners actually have two locations for guests to stay. The main location is in their multi-bedroom large condominium; the other location is a small studio condominium that's within the same apartment complex. We stayed in the studio because they were doing some remodeling in their house. The studio is good if you prefer total privacy, however, it is not as upscale as the main guest house.

The owners were extremely friendly and showed us to a restaurant as well as provided a gay map of the city with points of interests and suggestions for things to do at night. They hosted us for drinks and snacks at their large condominium one evening, which is gorgeous and comfortable with a huge patio and panoramic views of the city and wonderful art all around. A stay at that location would be very comfortable.

The location is centralized and within a 20 minute walk from all the major bars, clubs, and gay attractions in Marseille. It is also within a 20-25 minute walk of the old city and the port. Note that to get to the clubs, you have to walk several blocks through a very dirty and potentially unsafe part of town. We walked through this area quickly, usually late at night, and encountered no problems. But nonetheless, I would advise looking like you know where you're going and moving briskly to avoid attracting unwanted attention. Most clubs and bars don't open, much less get busy, until midnight, so you'll be traversing through this "danger zone" if you plan to venture out on foot.

Street parking around the BnB is practically impossible to find, as is the case in most French cities. The owners rented us a tiny parking space that belongs to their neighbor, in the condominium garage. However, this may or may not be available depending on whether the neighbor is home; it will also only fit very tiny cars so do not plan to park in it if you have a large U.S.-sized sedan.

  • Liked — The owners were very friendly and went out of their way to offer us suggestions and make us feel welcome.
  • Disliked — The studio apartment we rented is apart from the main guest apartment, is therefore kind of lonely. It was also not nearly as luxurious as the main guest apartment.

The best place to discover Marseille at a reasonnable price, in the center. Very warm welcome by Jean-Laurent and Philippe in their beautiful flat with a stunning view on the Marseille roof tops, the Panier, Notre-Dame de la Garde and the beginning of Calanques. The flat is very clean, nicely decorated and calm. The stunning view from the "Blue Room" unable you to admire Notre Dame de la Garde from your bed. You'll wake up with the lovely smell of the fresh bread cooking in the oven and you'll enjoy breakfast with the home made jams, on the terrasse embellished by plants and flower from Provence.
You can, from there, enjoy Marseille, the "Vieux Port" and the nightlife just by walking in this safe area of town.
Loved it for the friendly atmosphere, the breakfast, the location and the view!
Will recommend to have diner in the nearby "Bistrot a Vin"!

  • Liked — The smell of the fresh bread cooking in the oven when I woke up!
  • Disliked — The mosquitos, but that the South of France!
