to anyone contemplating staying at this hotel - DONT. it is situated in an unsafe area, its difficult to communicate with the staff, there are barely any facilities and the rooms are small and dirty....
i will now go into detail - whilst living in the french alps with my partner we decided to take a trip to Marseille for the weekend, after a long journey we finally arrived at then 'Les Gens Der Mer Hotel'. First impressions were 'this area is not safe' the hotel is situated down a backstreet (it was very awkward to find) we firstly attempted to walk down the street to get some much needed dinner and immediately were made to feel very unwelcome by the locals, it was only around 7.30 but we returned to the hotel as we did not feel it was safe to walk around at night. still starving we hoped we would be able to grab a snack at the hotel, the man in reception didn’t speak very good English (although did try his best to help us) but eventually translated that we would be unable to get any food.
after checking into the hotel we dragged our bags up the stairs to find our room which was small and grubby, the door which separated the toilet/shower to our room was adequate to a sliding wardrobe door so there was no privacy when in the bathroom. the shower was also dirty and clogged up with hair from the previous guests.
as we decided to call it a day and go to bed, we put the tv on very low (which we could barely hear anyway from the noise outside) when we heard a frantic banging at our door, the man next door was standing outside our room aggressively shouting at us in a foreign language, the walls were so thin that he could hear the tv. after apologising we turned off the tv and decided that we needed to leave the hotel first thing in the morning.
we woke up the next morning as early as possible to get out of the area, we had to wait at reception until someone finally turned up to cancel our booking and get a taxi as far away as possible. we got a taxi to the other side of Marseille which took about 10mins, we went to the old port which was just a complete different setting, the surrounding area was beautiful and we felt safe enough to walk around as freely as we liked. we booked our last night at the ‘Hotel Escale Oceana’ which was just brilliant the staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful, the rooms were modern, spacious and clean and we were right overlooking the docks with restaurants all around us and a short bus ride to the cathedral and beach. this turned our trip around but had it not been for this, i would never have wanted to return to Marseille again.
