“Architectural gem offering exceptional service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

Hotel Dieu is a landmark in Marseille. The grounds are expansive, immaculate, and are best enjoyed on the terrace either during the morning buffet breakfast or over an evening nightcap. The hotel is well located -- a 5 or so minute walk from dozens of fine restaurants, shopping, museums and the bustling Port Vieux in the heart of Marseille. My room was clean and well appointed.

Despite all this, the highlight of my stay was the outstanding service. As a solo traveling non-French speaker in France for the first time, I definitely needed help selecting restaurants, getting an international mobile phone, selecting activities, etc.

The Chief Concierge Audrey Berr and her team in particular stood out for exceptional service. Audrey and her team are quite simply the best Concierge I've ever worked with and adept at handling juggling multiple requests with graceful efficiency. They helped make my stay in Marseille a highlight of my trip to France and have made the Hotel Dieu my "go-to" hotel any time I am in France.

This was a last minute decision to stay at this hotel as we travelled to Marseille from Annecy in search of sun.

It was one of my better decisions. We got the sun but we also got a wonderful hotel which lived up to its five star billing. We loved the room even though it was only a standard room. We enjoyed drinks on the terrace over looking the harbour and we took a dip in the indoor pool, which we had to ourselves.

Obviously been a quality hotel it's not cheap however considering its location and facilities I think it's good value for money. 25€ per day for parking is a bit steep but seems to be the going rate for secure parking.

The staff were very helpful, so much so I think the concierge almost knew us by name the amount of questions we asked her.

We have just stayed for two nights in this lovely hotel. The quality of the furnishings is first rate and the room is very spacious. The conversion from a hospital to a hotel has been done very tastefully, and with great sympathy to the original building.

Unfortunately, our stay was spoiled by the dining experience. On our first evening in the hotel it was quite windy making it cold and uncomfortable to sit outside. When we tried to book a table for our evening meal we were told that all tables were taken. Unbelievably, the indoor restaurant was closed and everyone had to eat outside on the terrace. We ended up having to eat on the terrace in the drinks area choosing something to eat from the snack menu. Bread was served dry with no butter or balsamic/oil, and the soup was only just warm. The choice was very limited.

On the second night we booked a table for two, but once again we had to sit on the terrace. Whilst not as windy as the first night, it was still rather cool, and many people were complaining about being cold. No heaters were provided and all the hotel could do was to provide blankets for people to wrap themselves in to keep warm. In our experience guests in five star hotels normally dress quite formally for dinner. In this one, guests were having to put on jumpers and coats.

All this was compounded by the fact that their was not a large choice on the menu, and the food, when it came, was not properly cooked. When my wife complained that her veal was raw in places she was told that it was because it was thinly sliced! The waiters did not seem properly trained, serving me before my wife, putting out the wrong cutlery and having to be reminded about drinks orders.

If you do come to stay here I suggest you come prepared to wrap up warm.

Refurbished from an old hospital, this hotel has one of the most beautiful interior design in a classical building. One of the staff explained the design intent and how they used local material, and reference to the catedral as inspiration, finished off with modern clean line design. The rooms are very well appointed, luxurious for a 5 star standard. The concierge needs special mention, because they recommended an excellent private tour guide, Cedric from "Be a Guest" to take care of us during our stay, and he has made our trip to Marseilles so memorable.
The michelin- starred restaurant headed by Lionel Levy is excellent, great food, and nice ambience. I hope he will get his third star soon! In fact the hotel is a destination by itself, and the port view from the hotel is amazing.
This is indeed a gem in intercontinental group, a big break from the old and tired hotels in other parts of europe.

Room Tip: Ask for the port view.

Marseilles was the final stop on a 2 & 1/2 European business trip (with my wife tagging along - grin!) for me. I decided to spend a few extra Euros for a really nice spot. The Hotel Dieu did not disappoint! It is a beautiful hotel on a hillside overlooking the harbor in Marseilles. From the front entrance, you have view that looks right across at the Notre Dame de la Garde cathedral. It is very much a 5-star experience from the details of the rooms, the greeting from the staff on arrival, to the entire staff. Is it pricey? Yes. It is worth it. Most definitely yes! We'd stay there again in a heartbeat. Just an FYI - if you are a member of the IHG Rewards Club - you can get lower rates and free wifi there.

Pulling up to the gates of this hotel is absolutely beautiful. The green lawns and historic building mixed with its modern interior make it a must stay if you are in Marseille. The rooms are well designed, and the rooftop restaurant is delicious and offers a great view of Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel.

The staff was very attentive and pleasant. In particular, Audrey and Katherine at the concierge desk and the doormen gave outstanding service. We were celebrating a special anniversary so we splurged on one of the terrace rooms on the top floor with a view of the port and were very pleased. The bed was very comfortable and the rain shower was delightful. On our first night, we had drinks and a cheese plate in the bar with, again, excellent service. We dined one night on our terrace and experienced prompt room service and very good food.

I would have no hesitation to recommend the Hotel Dieu to a colleague and hope to return to Marseilles so I can stay again.
