“nice hotel overlooking the harbour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

The building was turned into a hotel and opened very recently. Restoration was done in a very fine manner. Lighting in the staircases and the terrace were outstanding. The neighborhood is not as fancy as the hotel. The vieux port is within walking distance. Large bedroom and bathroom. Breakfast is good but only american and european taste. We tried the restaurant , inexpensive and facing the church notre dame de la garde. Minor issues about waiting time for breakfast, valet parking and birthday cake for dinner were experienced. The general manager answered to us in a very appropriate way.

It was a beautiful hotel, a beautiful room, and I could not be more impressed with the management and staff.

We were upgraded to a king deluxe harbor view room as we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and they had some extra treats waiting in the room for us. I was so pleased and it was so thoughtful of them. We are plain old base Priority Club members and we used points for our room, but the way they made our 30th anniversary arrival so special meant the world to me.

Based on the above, I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone. But what happened next made the IC Marseille Hotel Dieu my favorite hotel for life.

We arrived on a Monday evening with our rental car and checked in and got our bags etc up to our room. We then needed to return our rental car to the train station. After a bit of driving in circles we made it to the gate of the car rental return lot. We buzzed the attendant to let the gate up so we could enter, and at that very moment a motorcycle pulled up right behind us, the passenger jumped off the bike, yanked open our back car door, grabbed a bag that contained our iPad and whizzed off. It all happened in less than 5 seconds.

Well, of course we were upset. Both with the thief and with ourselves for making such a rookie mistake as to have left the car doors unlocked. They HAD been locked but I had jumped out of the car at the HI Express across from the train station to ask them where the rental return was, and when I got back in they didn't get re-locked. dumb dumb dumb.

We filed a report at the police station and went back to the hotel all upset. I wasn't happy with the loss of the iPad itself but I was really worried that the they might be able to open it (it was password protected, but still) and get access to personal financial info. Identity theft would be a nightmare.

Concierge Jacob at the hotel helped us make calls to the US on the hotel phone so we didn't have to use our cell, and let us use his computer to get on line to look for info and change passwords. Since it was 10 pm in Marseille, and Memorial Day in the US, we didn't get anywhere too fast with connecting to any live persons

The next morning (our 30th anniv) we went down at 8am and Concierge Audrey helped us again - to call Apple, AT+T, and get on line again to take care of some other items to try to protect our info. Since we are "mono-lingual" we really appreciated the multi-lingual concierges who called Apple France for us. I just cannot say enough about how kind Audrey and Jacob were to us and calmed us down and helped us through the issue. The hotel also called their local police contact to see if there was anything more that could be done.

So, while I would not expect that anyone one else would have an incident like ours, if you need assistance the excellent staff is there for you! They all treated us so kindly during all of our stay I cannot say enough for them. A hotel is a building but what raises this one up is the staff. They really turned the situation around for us so that we could go on and enjoy our 30th annniversary.

The GM Madelijn Vervoord, whom I met while there, is running a top notch operation and has hired excellent employees to represent their company and hotel.

I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying a stay at this hotel and I hope yours is less eventful than ours!

Location is everything and the view from the hotel down to the old port and up again to the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica is spectacular. Perched on the flanks of the Le Panier neighborhood in the oldest part of Marseille – Hotel Dieu is a majestic, converted old hospital built in 1753 by Marseilles architect Claude-Henri Jacques d'Aggeville. The attention to detail goes well beyond the standard you generally see in hotels and it is not difficult to understand why the Intercontinental brand entrusted the interior architecture to Jean-Philippe Nuel. The white, grey black color palette gives the hotel an elegance and sophistication.
The room was nicely decorated with small little extras like the Navettes (a typical biscuit from Marseille), the beds were comfortable, the bathroom (with a rainshower) spacious and the large terraces overlooking the city (we were on the topfloor) a nice extra. Staff is very friendly and helpfull and speak their languages. The only downside I see could be the price, although it reflects the standard of this kind of hotel.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hotel Dieu Marseille, albeit a short one. Looking forward to our next time.

This is a spectacular location. The lobby is like the set of a movie. The staff, especially the Concierge team, was bilingual and respectful which made the stay more enjoyable. The room was lovely and the view of the Port and Notre Dame De La Garde were breathtaking(there was an extra cost).

The downside was that fees were high. The buffet breakfast, at 29 Euros($40 American) was outrageous as was room service and access to the gym/spa was problematic.

In sum we enjoyed our stay at this beautiful hotel.

Room Tip: Though there is a fee the Port-Church view is excellent.

This is a truly magnificient, super stylish intercontinental. great location near the port. Staff superb, all multi lingual and nothing too much trouble. Great gym - large well equipped and full of light. Really enjoyed staying here. The prices of drinks and extras reflect the standard of the hotel in an expensive country! - continental breakfast 35euro, bottle of water from minibar 11euro.

This is greatly restored historical hospital with many modern features but not loosing its past era character. Building itself as well as location are absolutely gorgeus. Views from lobby, bar and restaurant as well as from our rooms were breathtaking. Looking day and night at Vieux port of Marseille and Notre Dame de la Garde church awakened our imaginations and brought us back to the Alexander Dumas story of Duke of Monte Cristo. Very relaxing. Rooms are quiet, modern and cosy with big bathrooms with separate bath, toilet and shower. Enough storage space. Bed with firm mattress and very comfortable. A/C very quiet.
The staff at the hotel is very helpful and friendly. Just one observation is that whole team is very young. We tend to appreciate a mix of experienced senior employees offering charm and confidence mixed with eager to learn young people.
We have had very good interaction with concierge team already prior to our arrival and on site as well. Most of their recommendations were very good. You can trust Mr. Jakob in his advices as well as Ms. Raphaelle.
On negative side for us a major annoying factor were the security measures (which we understand should exist in some form however) at this place mentioned already in previous posts. Each time you enter the gate and/or entrance you are asked what you want there from security guys. Though they are polite you do not want to be all the time disturbed by same questions. Also on arrival it surprised us in unpleasant way that we were asked a long list of questions just stepping out of taxi from the airport by bellboys! asking what we want there and if we have booking and under which name, please spell your name! etc.... Simple good morning, welcome to our hotel and how was your flight, this is the way to the front desk or so will be much more appropriate... But we went through this experience and we had a very pleasant stay afterwards.
Summarizing however we feel that this is one of the best InterContinentals we have experienced and it has huge potential!

Room Tip: Port view is worth it for an amazing views
