“Good hotel with great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013

We've just come back from a night at Mama Shelter in Marseille. I'd read about it in a travel magazine a while ago and wanted to give it a try. We ended up paying more for the room than I'd hoped, but they did give us a free upgrade on check-in.

The hotel is near a very interesting and lively area of Marseille, the Cour Julien which is a short walk away. We've been to Marseille a couple of times before but only during the day and mainly stayed around the old port and the shopping area so it was great to see a new area of Marseille and also to experience it as the sun goes down.

The hotel itself has a very interesting design and some really nice touches, but the thing that impressed me the most was the attitude of the staff who couldn't do enough to make your stay as pleasurable as possible. We were particularly impressed by one of the girls on reception who got us a last minute table at a very popular Italian restaurant for dinner and also by one of the guys who worked in the outdoor bar and was chatty and friendly.

If we were to go back to Marseille and I could get a slightly cheaper rate I would definitely go back to Mama Shelter. I hear that they have other hotels in other cities which I will try if I get the chance!

The Mama Shelter is the new place to be seen in Marseilles - a trendy hotel located quite unusually in a popular downtown district, quite far from most Marseilles usual hot spots and attractions (the city is orientated to the sea and most places of interest are on the seashore and all around the Vieux-Port historical district). I guess this was part of the concept to implement the building in the middle of "Marseille's genuine popular narrow streets" with clothes hanging from the windows, sleaze and cheap bistrots and pizzeria nearby and so on. Actually there is a metro station within a walking distance of the hotel, that bring the guests to the Vieux-Port in less than 10 minutes... so location is not a real problem. Beware, from the outside, it does not look like an hotel, and the entrance door is quite hard to find - I guess this is as well part of the concept. Actually I stayed in the Mama Shelter for a business meeting - did not have to use the rooms then because I am a local, but other colleagues enjoyed their rooms and breakfast. Business room are all right, service was great. The restaurant is fine - nothing extraordinary in your plates still, with a strong "eat healthy" orientation. The chef is swedish as far as I understood. The restaurant and the inner patio is nice, very very (too much?) trendy - with a definitive "welcome to bobo-land" style (can't translate it in english - "bobos" in France are snob, healthy, rich and openly liberal people who constantly want to demonstrate that they are modern, open-minded and global-world friendly ). Overall, this is still a place of its own in Marseilles. You can like it or hate it, but at least, this is different.

Not your average hotel. Clean, ikea-ish but comfy. Daringly placed mirrors with camera strategically placed allow you to use your imagination, with the complementary scooby-doo and Sylvester the cat masks! Excellent dinner had in the restaurant, which also houses a
Live DJ on weekends. Lots of free movies on their streamlined Apple TV and wifi. Our suite also was equipped with a fridge, microwave and a proper hair dryer. Option to reserve a spot on the marseille beach, but weather was too cold to take advantage of it. Will definitely check out their other locations one day.

We are in our 50 and this is a very funky hotel - we didn't feel out of place for a minute. We loved it. Polished concrete and Apple TV, very clean and comfortable.

Only thing was there wasn't much around it, but if you wlk for about 15 - 20 minues you will find lots to look at.

We ate at the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast and found the food extensive and reasonably prices. All the staff were so helpful and made you feel very welcome.

Sleep quality was also very good.

From the minute we stepped inside this hotel, we could tell that it was very different to most other hotels. The lobby is small but full of interesting furniture and things to look at. The staff on reception were very helpful and welcoming. The bedroom is very different to any other hotel room I have ever seen! The walls are bare concrete and the floor covering is lino. The only furniture in the room is the bed in the middle with an integral desk behind the bedhead, and two small bedside tables that pull out from under the bed. The only things on the wall were three masks and two very large mirrors propped at the side of the bed. So it's not Louis XV in style, but it is stylish...and incredibly comfortable and spotlessly clean! I loved it because it is so different and an absolute bargain for a city-centre boutique hotel.

We stayed on a busy Saturday night, so the restaurant was very busy the next morning for breakfast. I was disappointed to see that very few tables were being cleared away, and we had to do this ourselves....and we were not the only ones. However the day after our stay, I received a survey by email and I fed this back, and was very pleasantly surprised to received a reply from the manager apologising for this and ensuring it would be fed back. I definitely got the impression they are serious about customer service.

The hotel is located about 15 minutes walk from the old port and you will have to make up your own mind about this. Marseille is definitely an edgy city and some guests may feel more comfortable with this than others. We are well travelled and not really phased by much and we were happy to walk during the day, but preferred to take the metro in the evening and there are two stations very close by.

All in all, I loved my stay at Mama Shelter and hope to return, as well as try the other hotels they have elsewhere.

what a lovely hotel in the best place of Europeans culture capital of 2013. You can have a drink at the bar with overhead live belts , you can sit at the Mac and check your mails like in an Arabian Souk . When you wake up tell the hotel staff "Mama please clean my room"

Later you can better leave, because you don´t want to spent your whole day only at the hotel , even if Philipp Stark designed it.

When the "Grade Nation" invites to all of this festival in Marsielle, you cant stay in an other hotel .. go ahead a see for your self...

Mama Shelter provides an interesting, novel and memorable hotel experience. We got an amazing deal (49 Euros/night) and spent the weekend. The room was clean, we took full advantage of the iMac in the room with free movies, and the bed was very comfortable. The location of the hotel is good, being a 15 minute walk to Le Vieux Port. I walked from the hotel to Le Vieux Port many times over the course of the weekend including alone at night and it was fine. Parking is very secure and does not cost much more than it would elsewhere in the area. The hotel overall is secure as you can only access your floor with your room card. The front desk staff was very helpful in providing directions and suggesting restaurants. The priority at this hotel is the modern, sleek, hip design of the place. Another reviewer has commented on the impracticality of some aspects of the design (no fridge, why provide a hot plate, bathroom door awkward, etc.) however there are some positive aspects to the design of the rooms, particularly the desk built into the back of the bed, where we ate take-out food with a great view of the TV. The main downside of the room we stayed in was that it was on the third floor facing the front entrance, and the restaurant downstairs essentially turned into a night club on Saturday night. As a result it was a bit noisy late at night with people stepping outside for a smoke, but it didn't interrupt our sleep that much. If noise bugs you and you're staying Saturday night then I would recommend requesting a room that doesn't face the front entrance. I would recommend this hotel for couples seeking to get away for a few days and seeking a different hotel experience.
