“Absolutely awful, without doubt the worst hotel I've stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2009

I stayed here for one night in November and the whole experience was absolutely awful.

As soon as we arrived we were made to feel very unwelcome and were treated as if we shouldn't be there. The staff were the rudest and most hostile I've ever come across, talking about us amongst themselves and to other guests in French (a language they didn't think we could understand) whilst we paid the bill.

They made us wait 2 hours to check into a room that was already available and when we were finally allowed to go up we were given a room on the top floor despite the fact others were available and there are no lifts. I really did feel that the staff were being deliberately unhelpful and obstructive, seemingly going out of there way to make our stay as unpleasant as possible.

There were no clean towels so we had to go around the other vacant rooms trying to find some, it then became apparent to us that although all the rooms were pretty abismal, we had been given the worst one in the building. There were wires hanging from the walls, the carpet was filthy and I only slept in the bed out of sheer exhaustion.

If you have got ANY option other than to stay in this hotel, I would strongly advise you to take it! How it has got any stars at all is completely beyond me!

Stayed in a single room in this hotel for 1 night in September 2008.

Hotel is well located. It is on a major side street just off La Canebiere -which is the major shopping street in Marseille. It is about a 10 minute walk down La Canebiere to the Port / main restaurants.

It was reasonably easy to find from the railway station -walk down Boulevard D'Athenes until you get to La Canebiere, walk up La Canebiere until you see a large church on the right and then take Cours Franklin Roosevelt and the hotel is on the right.

Reception was very friendly. The middle-aged lady didn't speak much English but i speak a little French and everything was dealt with efficiently and with a smile.

The room was clean, a good size and was tastefully decorated as was the hotel in general. There was a great flat-screen TV with approx 40 channels -but not one in English unfortunately. Bed was nice and comfy, shower was good. All in all a nice room.

Free wi-fi was available and you need to ask for a password at reception. The password was huge and didn't work at first but after a few attempts it connected.

Problems: Only one. The air-con was poor. Marseille is hot and sticky in summer and there was a portable stand-up air-con unit in the room. It was very underpowered for the size of room though and just not up to the job.

So to summarize a good hotel and i'd definitely go back. I got the impression it is a family run hotel and therefore they seem to take a pride in the hotel that isn't found in a lot of other hotels. The staff were all good and the other guests seemed to be happy as well. Just upgrade the air-con and provide an English TV news channel and i would have rated it excellent.

I stayed at the Hotel Azur with my girlfriend for 3 nights in July 2007. I paid 68 EUR per night through Venere.com, although breakfast was not included. The room was small, but adequate with a comfortable double bed, and an en-suite bathroom. The shower was excellent and the room also had a fan and a small TV.

The hotel was clean and in generally good upkeep. The staff were helpful and luggage could be left at the reception. Note that there was no lift, so there are several stairs to climb to your room, particularly if you are on the top floor (5th I think).

The continental breakfast was good, but expensive at EUR 7.50 per person. It was served either in a small dining room or a nice but small back garden.

The hotel location was good at the top end of Canebiere (the main street) as long as you are prepared for a short walk. It was only 15 minutes walk to Vieux Port (the old port) and 10 minutes walk to the railway station (Gare St Charles). There was also a metro and tram stop about 2 minutes walk.

I would recommend this hotel for the price (apart from the expensive breakfast).

  • Liked — Nice, comfortable, clean room.
  • Disliked — The expensive price for breakfast.

This was a real treat when passing through Marseille... in a non-descript and rather dingy area of the city, but that is offset by the fact that it's only a quick métro ride from the railway station.
Everything inside was superb: spotlessly clean room and bathroom, efficient air-conditioning, and in the morning a quiet breakfast served in an interior garden.
Only possible drawback: there's no lift. So elderly and disabled travellers might prefer somewhere else.
