“perfect for a short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

Nicely located hotel, close to the rue Canebiere. Breakfast consists of bread&butter, confiture, yougurt, fruit salad, orange juice, coffee/tea and some pastry, but it is really substantial, if you eat it all. I had room 17, for one person there is enough space.
Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful.

We had room 23. It was a little room with old pink wallpaper and a little bathroom (with a great shower). One lamp didn't work. But, yeah it was cheap. The hall of the hotel and the service were great.

The pictures do not come close to the room we had, it was just awful. Two seniors from the US in just a full size bed. Two people and two pieces of luggage made it extremely tight to move around in. Lights were broken, tiney little bathroom and very noisey. We were on the second floor and had to drag suitcases up steps. We knew there was no lift but that was the least of the problem. Room was nighmare, so old and dingy, towels were good to exfoliate and a tiny soap for two days. The people were nice except for the owner. While he was standing outside (real jerk), I had to move the heavy sign in order to get the luggage to the car. Not even an offer to help. Not good eatery around (after 6 p.m.)nearby, except for Chez Picone. We left after giving notice. Only stayed 3 of 7 days. Stay in Aix en Provence, only an hour north, it was wonderful. Marseille alone was a nightmare, tearing up streets, good thing we had a GPS.

Room Tip: Stay in Aix en Provence and make a day trip to Marseille.

Reading different reviews here I wasn't quite sure what to expect, however I was most pleasantly surprised seing the location and service offered at Azur. We came 2 hours before the check-in time, and were immediately let in the room which was quite spacious with a huge bathroom and a wonderful view. It was clean, had towels, only thing missing was soap (shampoo was provided), there was also a decent hairdryer. The A/C and the TV functioned excellent, a lot better than in more expensive/more star hotels. Location was great, 10 minute walk to the old port, 2minutes to the metro, wonderful patisserie and a 24/7 store very close, not too far away from the St Charles station (only one metro stop away). Contrary to information about Marseille being an unsafe city we found it quite safe. The staff were extremely friendly ( as were everyone else in Marseille) and helpful. Price great - 110 euro for a triple room/night. Only downside - no elevator/fridge-minibar, but still not that bad at all. All in all, would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a convenient stay in Marseille, without expecting Hilton standards. You will be surprised and pleased and will not feel ripped off. Didn't take the breakfast - bought fresh fruit from little shops you can find anywhere, not to mention patisseries. They also have free WI-FI.

The location not far from the train station is probably the only good thing about it. In saying that, the night concierge was very pleasant. We were given a room on the fourth floor and had to carry our luggage all the way up a narrow staircase since there is no lift. When we got to our room we discovered that the A/C was not working.
The place was reasonably clean but not spotless.

We booked air conditioning Comfort room with Garden view (extra charge)
Conditioner didn’t work. They offered to move me to a different room for an extra charge (30 euro per night). So we couldn’t stay in the room during the day, it was too hot outside and inside 30C. It was an unattractive view of an inner backyard with hanging sheets right outside of my window. The washroom door didn’t open from the inside (only the outside)
Dirty towels (washed but with black stains on them). There was no lift and we had to bring the suitcases up a very narrow stair case ourselves.

We stayed at the Azur Hotel for 3 nights in May and found it to be perfectly acceptable. Its nothing amazing but its in a great location, the staff are friendly, the place is clean and the rooms are of a decent size. Our bathrooms were newly refurbished - one had a bath, one had a very good shower. We had breakfast on the cute garden terrace which was very tranquil. If you have a room on the street side there is traffic noise but if you are out the back its very quiet. There's no lift as many of these reviews state but that didn't bother us as there weren't loads of stairs. Overall, it did what we needed it to while we were there and we were able to get access to anything we needed.
