“Luxury and exceptional service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Sofitel Marseille vieux port is from another category. Staff were very helpful from doorman to receptionist to waiters. Rooms with a view on the vieux port is worth the extra, but you also have an exceptional view from the restaurant on 7th floor. Rooms were large and quiet, very good after an overnight flight, ready early with bags in the room. The concierge helped us get around but it is walking distance from the vieux port. Very safe in that area. Breakfast was pricey but amazing. The crowd is mainly business men but I was with my baby and parents and felt welcome anyways. I strongly recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon in November 2012 for 3 nights. We started our trip off with 4 nights in Paris and were absolutely exhausted by the time we made it to Marseille. We found Paris to be beautiful, but stressful – we had a very nice hotel there as well but it was about ¼ the size of our room at the Sofitel and more expensive. The location is great for views – but the walk to the port gets a little long if you have to make it multiple times a day – especially if you need to get to the other side, which is part of the reason I did not give 5 stars. This is just the way Marseille is set up though – so if you want to be right where the action is, stay someone closer to the harbor without the views.

This hotel has “American” sized rooms. We had a BEAUTIFUL view of the port. The bed was amazingly comfortable, the shower was luxurious (with multiple shower heads) and the room was very modern and tastefully decorated. We had all the hotel perks; bathrobes, slippers, shower caps, lotions, shampoos, a way to make our own coffee in room, etc We arrived in Marseille on a Sunday, a lot restaurants in town were closed, so we had to order room service for dinner. The hotel restaurant was way out of our budget. The food you can get for room service is only O.K. This is why I did not give 5 stars. I ordered pasta, and it was like a very bland macaroni and cheese. Then again I should have known better, from my experience France does not do pasta well. The room service club sandwich is the best deal at 23 Euro – is a big sandwich that can be shared and made an excellent lunch on an afternoon we did not want to venture out into the rain (because the restaurants in town were so far away). We ventured up to the restaurant on the top level with beautiful harbor views for a glass of wine and dessert one evening. The staff looked at us like we were from another planet for not ordering a full meal, but at 100 Euro for 2 glasses of wine and a shared dessert, it’s all we could afford.

We also made our way down to the spa, hoping to find a hot tub. There was not a hot tub, but there was a semi warm tub, and a warm pool. There were steam rooms and saunas as well. It was a beautiful spa, very nice to have on hand for the guests.

Overall, it was a great experience. Marseille in general was the perfect place to end our honeymoon. Much more low key then Paris and stunning, an absolutely stunning city. La Sofitel Vieux-Port was the perfect place to recuperate from Paris and enjoy being newlyweds.

Room Tip: Ask for harbor views.

Dear Madam,
We sincerely thank you for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. First of all, all the team of Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port would like to congratulate you for your weeding.
About your stay in our Hotel, we are deeply sorry that we were not able to offer you a pleasant step in Marseille as it can be.
For your next visit, we want to inform you that there are lots of public transports making the link between the harbour and the Hotel. You can take an electric bus at the cost of 0.50€ which is leaving in front of the Hotel, making the tour of the harbour up to the MUCEM (at the opposite of the Vieux Port). You also have the normal buses like the 83 or taxis. The way to go to the Port, by walking is around 10 to 15 minutes.
We are glad that after the stress that Paris caused you, you had the chance to relax in your room enjoying the ballet of boats going in and out of the old harbour of Marseille… As we like to say, the Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port has got one of the prettiest view of the Vieux Port, so we are really happy that you had the chance to enjoy it for your honeymoon. Besides, the SoSPA is offering a lot of amenities as a steam room, a sauna, massages rooms, a bathing tub etc. but it is true that we do not have a hot tub.
We are also sorry that the room service did not reach your expectations, it used to be known as a really gastronomic cuisine. At the restaurant of the seventh floor, Les Trois Forts which is a famous restaurant, the prices are relative to the quality of the products used. If you want to enjoy good cuisine at more affordable prices the Sofitel offers you the bar Le Carré which is located on the level of the reception with a beautiful view on the harbour.
Hoping to welcome you again soon for a new trip in the south of France,
Best regards,

Booked this hotel for one night in September as we were picking up a cruise ship in Marseille. We travelled from Aix by taxi (it takes about 20 mins and costs about 70 euros). The hotel overlooks the port although we had a room at the back of the hotel (I think a port view costs the earth). Saying that the room was beautiful and very clean & tidy. The service is excellent and you will get your bags etc taken to your room. When we came back from a night in Marseille chocolates had been put on our bed and classical music put on the Bose sound system! Breakfast was included in the price and is worth it for the beautiful view of the old port. We also had afternoon lunch at the hotel's poolside restaurant (again excellent). The pool is also excellent, a right sun trap with excellent poolside service. Had a night out around the old Marseille port. Not the cheapest place (france is very expensive due to the sterling exchange rate) but loads of atmosphere and very friendly.

Room Tip: The fare from the hotel to the commercial port (for cruise ships) is about 35 euros

This is a very comfortable hotel within walking distance of the old port. It looks a bit worn from the outside but sparkles inside and offers superb customer service. Check-in and check-out was extremly smooth, with the most smiles I have seen at a French hotel. My room did not face the port, which I knew before, but was not much of a problem. I would have probably been tempted to book a port-view room if it had had a balcony. The room was nicely appointed, and especially the bathroom with the rainforest shower was a hit. Wifi was fast and reliable, and free. My only concern was the bed, which was on the supersoft side. This made sleeping a bit tough for me. The pool was great; duirng my stay, there were ample empty chairs available to pick and chose.

Taxi from and to the airport on weekends or during night hours is about €60; a bit steep but very fast.

The "Trois Forts" restaurant is very good. Breakfast costs are too high though; I always walked to a cafe/bar half a block away where I could enjoy a good coffee and croissant, for €4.

This is definitely a place to stay, it is modern with beautiful view, the staff was professional, helpful, friendly and courteous. Everything was well presented and spic 'n span from the lobby to the room.
The bed was with an extra thick and soft goose down mattress which was so comfortable just like sleeping on clouds:-). The towels and bathrobes were white and clean without any dust and smells form the cleaning products. The bathroom was well stocked with Hermēs products and new towels were provided and room was tidied up at turndown service.
Our room didn't have the great view of the port but we sure enjoyed it at breakfast though. Their breakfast buffet tables were abundantly filled with so many fresh items and very pleasing to the eyes. But best of all, the panoramic view of the old port from the breakfast room, made me enjoyed breakfast even more than usual.

Having said all that, there were two things I didn't like: firstly it was the valet parking, they were not on top of things when we pulled up and waited behind 2 cars and they didn't even notice our arrival until I got out the car and flag one of the guys down, not very classy like the place I must say. However, once we got their attention, they were very prompt at taking care of our luggage and car.
Secondly, the hot water in the shower was not hot enough, it was lukewarm even though we turned it to the max. Luckily the weather was not cold otherwise it would have been disastrous....

Apart from those two things, everything was superb and highly recommended.

Double room runs €300 and breakfast is €26.

(Marked the Spa by mistake, couldn't unmark it:-(

This is the Renault Velsatis of hotels . Has all the things to tick all the boxes looks pretty good but in reality the whole place fails

Firstly valet parking , tiny area jammed up with taxis waited 20 mins for anyone to take the car.

Checkin slowed up by IT failure

One of three lifts doesnt work so endless wait for lift

The shower everything counter intuitive.....very French you turn taps wrong way and getting hot water extremely difficult

Lumpy bed

But yes the toiletries we very nice

For over 300 euros a night i will give a miss next time
