The front desk staff were friendly although trying to get accurate and helpful information from them on the local train and bus systems was like extracting blood from a stone.

We were advised to get a bus to Cassis until I asked the staff member how she would get there to which she replied that she would travel by train.

We were also incorrectly advised that the buses from the train station to the airport would take 90 minutes. Fortunately, concierge at the Sofitel was excellent and provided thorough detail on how to get there - pay the extra and stay there - their pool and terrace overlooking the harbour is great and service awesome.

Breakfast was nice and rooms were clean although I have no idea why this is a 4 star hotel

Located in 5 minutes walk from Old port and far from the shady streets near the train station. Very quiet with closed windows. Breakfasts are good. Room was not very clean: right above the bed we could see thick layer of dust and paint it with the finger: obviously this was not cleaned for the long time. This was surprising for 4-star hotel. Room cleaning service is not avaliable all day: we asked to have our room cleaned about 14.00 and they said that everyone from cleaning is gone already.

We stayed at the Mercure Marseille Centre for one night after a Star Clipper cruise. We are familiar with Accor Hotels, having stayed at many Novotels and Sofitels over the years. This Mercure was a good choice due to it's location near the old port, recent refurbishment and reasonable price.

The outside of the hotel is misleadingly ugly but inside, the refurbishment is very evident. The lobby is clean and modern. The lifts appear new as well. The room is the same. It is evident that a lot of thought went into the amenities and latest technology used. The room card is required to activate the lifts from the lobby. The lifts and the room doors only require a scan, not a swipe of the card (no fumbling with the card to find the correct direction). The room is bright and modern, I really liked the mural of Marseille on the wall, the easy-to-use safe, the instant coffee/tea pot, free WiFi and the ultra-modern bathroom with a rain forest shower head integrated into the ceiling (sorry previous reviewer commenting on showers for short people, I believe you couldn't figure out how to use it correctly).

In my opinion there were 3 things missing from an otherwise excellent hotel. 1) The thermostat in the room didn't seem to have any control of the temperature in the room. 2) The room contained only 3 small pillows. We are two people who each use 2 pillows for sinus issues when we sleep. I encountered a bunch of resistance and attitude when requesting another pillow. Shame on the staff member for not just delivering a simple, not uncommon request with a smile. 3) There is no common-use computer for printing airline boarding passes. It took me 3 tries to get a reception person to do the check-in for me from his computer. I don't want to be an ugly American labeling the staff, but two instances in one day leave me a bit disappointed with the service in general.

The hotel is just few hundred meters from the port/harbor. You can find lots of restaurants nearby if you want to go out for dinner. The service is very good and rooms as supposed are of good quality.

This is a very comfortable hotel situated about 5 minutes' walk from the old port. It's also next door to a very good shopping centre that has a Galleries Lafayette including an excellent grocery department. Members of staff were very pleasant and helpful. The beer was very expensive. The room was very spacious and comfortable with a very large bed. The shower, however, had to be used by hand as the wall fitting for the spray head was at waist height.

Room Tip: Ask if they have one with a shower that will spray you with water from about 2 metres high without t...

I stayed here for 3 nights and had room 404 with a view of the Notre Dame du Gard cathedral that was spectacular. It was a smoking room, t.v., mini fridge, breakfast included, clean and 5-10 minute walk from vieux port. You can walk to shopping, metro, sites and a mall next door. Well worth the price.

Room Tip: Room 404 if you smoke and want a great view.
