“Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Excellent location, just about all rooms are right on the water facing the notre dame on the hill, walking distance to everything worth visiting, including the excellent MUCEM, service was pleasant. Rooms were starting to look tired but good value.

I know others have commented on the location of this hotel but it truly is perfect. Ideal for walking to most of the major sights, it is also just a few steps from the metro (2 stops to Gare St Charles), near lots of bus routes and couldn't be closer to the boats to the islands. Our club room on the 7th floor had wonderful views of the port and Notre Dame de la Garde and, as the hotel is on the south side of the port, you get the sun all day on the balcony which is lovely. The black-out curtains make for a good sleep at night and we found the room extremely quiet. Our room was not luxurious and we had a few issues (we found it difficult to control the temperature, for example) but we also noted that the lighting was perfect for reading - so unusual in many hotels around the world. We didn't particularly like the 50's decor and the rather basic furnishings but that's a matter of taste. Some reviewers have commented on the high cost of breakfast (18 eu). It's true that a continental breakfast at a local café costs only 8 eu but that's not comparing like with like. The buffet was splendid - cereals, juices, meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, bacon, eggs, sausages, patisserie etc etc. It was served in a very pleasant breakfast room and we thought it a really nice start to the day.
While in our view some aspects of the service perhaps made this more a 3 star than a 4 star, we would nonetheless stay here again if we returned to Marseille.

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors have better views

Can't do much better for the location, close to most of the sites you'll want to visit in Marseille. Service was very good, very friendly and the rooms are quite nice. Large lobby with sitting area with library of picture books on Marseille and art, as well as large screen TV. We looked around quite a bit for the right hotel and feel we got it right with this one. We returned home to find out our good friends stayed at the same hotel and they felt the same way. Can be a little noisy at times, being right on the port, but that's the price you pay for the view.

A wonderfully situated hotel with charming and helpful staff.
Sitting in a big comfortable bed in the morning with a cup of tea to hand and the view across the harbour to enjoy was a big treat. We were also able to watch the Big Wheel being assembled just along the quay but the sounds of the workmen at night and the surrounding lights were all well-muffled by the heavy curtains. Also appreciated having two good pillows each and bedside lights that were perfect for reading - neither always found in even the most expensive hotels!
We agree with the other positive comments and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: The higher the better!

We were staying at a different hotel which was super but didn't have a restaurant so we did several laps of the port to choose a place to eat. We came across this restaurant full of happy looking diners tucking into delicious lunches, so we stopped. We were seated well away from the dreaded smokers which are still everywhere in France. The waitress sorted parasols for shade, brought us an apero very promptly and we settled down to a really great lunch with an Asian twist.
Very good indeed. We are looking forward to returning in Spring.

While luckily the blockout curtains worked like a charm, waking up every morning and going to sleep with the magnificent view of the historic city center and the main cathedral on the opposite hill from the balcony on the 7th floor was great. Spacious and very clean room, professional and friendly staff. As it was very warm even in September, the air condition came in handy. From the balcony you can make out subway/bus stops (www.rtm.fr) as well as the hop on/hop off open deck bus (www.marseillelegrandtour.com/marseille-circuit.php) and the boats that will take you to Château d'If (www.frioul-if-express.com) or to other excursions along the coast (www.croisieres-marseille-calanques.com). Behind the hotel, 150m to a supermaket (SuperU in Grand Rue) and 3 excellent bakeries (also selling fabulous takeaway pizza slices). 1 km waterfront promenade to the new museums MUCEM and Villa Méditeranée. Taxi EUR 10 to railway station outside peak hour.

I booked this room for the price point and convenience, as we were only staying one night in Marseilles. What a great hotel! The rooms were huge, the balcony was amazing, the beds were super comfortable, and the staff couldn't have been better. All the amenities were there, from coffee and tea in the room, to complimentary water bottles, to free wifi, to Occitane soaps and shampoos. The view of the harbor and Saint Jean Cathedral on the hilltop is unforgettable. The only thing better was the helpful and friendly staff. Go. Stay here. Enjoy!

Room Tip: 7th floor with view of the port. Room 706 has an extra room/ bed.
