“Great location, poor rooms.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

The location of this hotel is absolutely perfect, right at the Vieux Port, where you can take a boat cruise to visit the Calanques, and close to very good restaurants and cafes. However, some rooms are very small and needs renovation. My room was smelling like a wet dog so I had to keep the window opened the most of the time I was there. The breakfast is ok, but could be better. Definitely, there are better options in the area for the same price.

Ottimo albergo, ottima posizione. Ideale per un week-end a Marsiglia
An excellent hotel belonging to the Mercure-MGallery Collection Hotels, right on the port side. Excellent setting off point for visiting Marseilles and the surrounding area of the Calanches.

Just at the abrupt end of the small bay revealing the old harbour, the Grand Hotel is not so grand (fr. big) but surely a very good choyce. The service was kind and helpful, but then I tried to speak some French, so I guess they were in a good mood... The view would have been spectacular (at the top floor, facing the harbour), but work was in progress, transforming the shore in something that's intended to be great... sometime in the near future. Nevertheless, the location is so good, that you just have to reach... it's all there! The renowned Canebière (Monte Cristo... ring a bell?) starts one hundred meters away from the hotel, and the Opera is just around the corner. I had a two level flat that was just under the roof, and I felt, I was spoiled. So, if you're not some prince or some dude that recently discovered oil in his backyard, it will do!

The Grand Hotel is part of the Accor/Mercure hotel group which I find provides a dependable standard of comfort, cleanliness, and service. It is located right at the Vieux Port (old port) with wonderful views looking out over the harbor. No dining other than breakfast, but restaurants are a minute walk away on the port for great seafood and Marseille's traditional bouillabaisse. The Petit Train is right across the street, which is a great way to see more of the city and get up the hill to Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde. Shopping, banking, and a city TGV office are just a block or two behind the hotel on the major street " La Canebière". Also just behind the hotel's back entrance is the Metro, making a convenient way to get to the St Charles train staion.

And apparently forgot her suitcases...which are on display in the lobby. Arriving from San Francisco, just getting in to the City by bus, then finding the hotel from the train station already quite an ordeal, you're not looking for any problems and we didn't have any. Trying our rusty French, the receptionists were friendly and honored our reservation made from the central Accor web site weeks earlier, got us the promised view of the historic port and helped every day to find museums, restaurants and shopping areas with maps, brochures and phoned reservations. Every day (3) the breakfast was good and copious. The showers do need to be redesigned, but the quaint atmosphere of the lobby added to the experience and made it feel like we were not in a chain hotel. Walking in the neighborhood of the hotel isquite interesting. The staff were firm in their suggestion to visit the calanqes by boat and that was the most fantastic part of our visit. We thank them. An excellent place to get over jet lag!

Room Tip: Ask for atop floor with view on the old port

This hotel is friendly and has a great location overlooking the port. The windows open out to the bustling street below, but despite it being Bastille Day, it was not very noisy. Marseille is undergoing a major renovation to the waterfront area presently, so be prepared for a construction zone for now. If I was in Marseille again, I'd definately stay again at this hotel.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

We were on their "business plan," which included the lowest room rate and a very good buffet breakfast. The location is fantastic, at the head of the old port, but the area is currently torn up to rebuild the streets, etc., along the waterfront. As a result, the one-way streets have changed direction, and the entrance to rue Beauvau is hard to find (call the front desk for directions if you have problems). Our room was a bit old in the teeth, in need of renovation; it supposedly had a "garden view" which was really a concrete vertical tunnel. Undoubtedly the more expensive rooms with harbor view are nicer--and they certainly have a great view! It is in the same building as the tourist information office, and there are a lot of good seafood restaurants within easy walking distance. Parking is by valet, for a fee, although one could drive to a parking garage. The bar (1st floor) has a great harbor view and good drinks....

Room Tip: Get a harbor view room, if possible.
