I can't recommend this charming place too highly. It is located a couple of streets back from La Plage, the stretch of "beach" of the Marseilles harbourside a couple of kilometres from Vieux Ports, the tourist harbourside centre. The location of this guesthouse is good as the street parking here is good and it's a very accessible and convenient spot from which to either walk to the beachside (a few minutes), or drive off in any direction.
The place itself is uttlerly charming - once you pass the front door, it becomes a little oasis (containing the a triumvirate of the eponymous palm trees, and some locely trees and vines), incredibly well-ordered so that every part of the property is a unique and charming little vantage point. In essence, it comprises three units - a suite, a studio and a double bedroom, all nestled around the pool/garden area. It is compact but intimate, which each unit having its own little bit of outside space - whether a sofa under a pagoda, or a set of deckchairs, or an outside table and chair breakfast/lunch space. It's communal, but intimate. We were there in winter but the pool would be great in summer.
We stayed in the double room. It has a conmfortable bed and ensuite bathroom. Nicely decorated, smallish but cosy. It's very quiet, and just the sound of the wind in the trees outside, so we sleept well. There is wifi which works well (this now seems to be standard anywhere in France, no matter how apparenty rustic the location).
The breakfasts, in Madame Khalify's living room, are homely and friendly, and you have the chance to meet your felllow guests. Madame Khalify is an engaged, thoughtful, generous and courteous host, and alot of fun too. She gave a great - and I mean great - dinner recommendation and was otherwise helpful and considerate towards us. We're happy no that we have found a base in Marseille, as whenever we visit for weekend trips to this great city we'll come back to La Palmeraie.
This is exactly what I look for in a guesthouse and I'm therefore happy to accord it my highest recommendation.
The double room is for 1-2 people, outside there's a lounge setting amongst leaves. The studio i...
