“Charming hotel, lovely owners and great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

The rooms are large and bright and clean, and decorated in the Moroccan style. The beds are comfortable and large. The bathrooms are fine although, typically for France, the bath was too small (squeezing 6'2" of Englishman into French bathtubs is a recurring problem in France).
The owners and staff are charming and couldn't be more helpful, nothing is too much of a problem.
The location can initially be underwhelming, however you are ideally placed for exploring the town with the main street running down to the Old Port just outside and good tram and metro links to the rest of the city. The area is also close to the vibrant food markets which are well worth a visit.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not a luxurious hotel, it's a charming boutique hotel and it's fantastic value.

Room Tip: The first floor rooms are fantastic, with a great view out onto the garden. I'd recommend paying...

The entrance was kind of let down. The family was wondering if this time, i have got them a raw deal. But once we were inside, it felt better. A private home, once, seems to have been converted to the best that was possible.
Our Dupleix room was outside in the courtyard. The fresh paint could still be smelt. The stay was ok, nothing much to rave about or complain. For the cost that we paid, it seemed a bit over priced. But i guess that is the prevailing rate in Marseilles.
Saleem, the owner cum Manager did his best to make our stay comfortable. Prepared for us a decent breakfast. Showed us around couple of other rooms. Not bad for a short stay. But the atmosphere around the Hotel was uninviting.
will we come back? i am not sure.
will I recommend to others, maybe if they are not too choosy.
Marseilles city itself was a poor sight. Dirty and stinking, was imagining a much more elegant city, given its history and location near South of France.

Room Tip: Nothing much to add

Had to go to Marseille unexpectedly & booked this room because it got good reviews on tripadvisor. As some people say it's not for everyone. But we are seasoned 60+ year old
travelers so we aren't as picky & don't get as intimidated. Granted it's on a side street that
can be a little iffy. I was glad I had my husband with me at night. But then again at 8:30 in
the morning their were "ladies of the night" nearby. But you're right near the main street
that goes right to the port, which is great for restaurants & shopping right off it. The hotel
is great! The bed was the most comfortable we had in our 30 days in France. The linens
were excellent. We had a Nespresso machine in our room. Huge bathroom. Big couches
& a flat screen tv. All for $100 a night. The owners & the staff are super friendly & very helpful.
Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to try the breakfast. Heard it's really good.

I liked this hotel. It offered phenomenal value. It was exactly what I was looking for but I understand it wouldn't be the right hotel for everybody.

NOT the right hotel for you if:
- You are looking for a luxurious hotel,
- You have two kids, three suitcases and a stroller. The hotel is in an old traditional house with no elevator,
- You want a quiet retreat. The rooms facing the street can be noisy, given the central location.

The right hotel for you if:
- You are looking for a decently priced hotel in a central location,
- You want to experience the Mediterranean charm of a Moroccan owned hotel,
- You like simply furnished but stylish rooms,
- You want a small authentic boutique hotel.

Service was very friendly.

We booked a night based on the reviews from tripadvisor and sadly it totally led us astray! The hotel is definitely not in a good location. In order to unload our bags we had to circle the block three times and throw them out of the car! This was really difficult with a child. The owners were very nice and helped us with our bags which was great. However, the room was not clean. The linen was fine but the floors and the bath were definitely not clean. We did not shower. The noise from the street below is extreme. You can also hear the other guests. Definitely couldn't fall asleep until well past 1 am. I appreciate the owners trying to start a new business but would not recommend at all.

When we asked for the Ryad and passed the address, the taxi driver pretended not to know it. When we arrived, he told us that it was a rotten hotel in a bad district. We should listen to him and go and stay in the Excelsior. (In simple terms this means that it is in the North African district). We were extremely fortunate that we ignored him. The hotel is very central and everything you want to see is about 10 minutes walk. It is clean, with spacious rooms, loads of hot water, in a quiet street, air-conditoned and heated. The brothers who own and run it are welcoming, attentive and, if you want the best advice on where to go and what to visit, very informative. This hotel is not for the snobby - it does not have a bellhop or a concierge. It is, however, in the heart of one of the coolest and safest areas in Marseille. I would recommend it, unreservedly.

Room Tip: Go for the second floor at the back

We LOVED le Ryad. We stayed there in July of 2012 actually, a part of our 3 week honeymoon in France. Marseille is a totally overwhelming city, to be sure, and if you're expected to stay at the George Cinq, well -- stay in Paris. Le Ryad is totally gorgeous in decor, bed was great, bath and toiletries were unique and comfortable, great water pressure, and THE BEST breakfast of our entire stay in France/Amsterdam/Belgium. The garden is utterly calming, it's like a little oasis in the middle of the city. Would absolutely stay there again if we're lucky enough to get back to bubbling, bristling Marseille.
