My wife and I travel though France on our way to our holiday home in Spain regularly and recently stayed at the Ibis hotel at Orange Sud for one night en route being 650 miles from our home in UK and 650 miles from our destination. The hotel itself was more than adequate being clean and comfortable and the staff were more than helpful, speaking perfect English once I had finished introducing myself in my terrible schoolboy French. We ate in the adjoining restaurant and again the staff, whose English was not as good as the reception staff but never the less 10 out of 10 for effort, guided us though the menu suggesting a bottle of local wine to accompany it. When we asked how local was ’local’ she pointed out the Chateunnef de pape winery across the road. However, although we saved on the carbon miles by choosing a local wine it was still €40.00, (£40.00 at the then exchange rate). But the meal was more reasonable, two entrecote steaks with salad and a salad buffet starter for €36.00 for two.
The hotel had a pool but it was closed for maintenance, (I guess it would be in February!). The room was small but clean, more than adequate for on night. The hotel bar was, again, clean and very quite, but as we had been on the road for approximately 12 hours we were in bed early.
The following morning we considered breakfast but on looking at it we decided that €15.00 was a lot for what was on offer and decided to rely on the sandwiches that we had left in the cool box over night.
One of the main reasons we initially chose this hotel was because of its advertised secure car parking, on arrival we found the automatic gate to the car park locked in the open position with a piece of card taped across the sensor to fool it in to thinking that there was something across the entrance and so keeping it open. Believing that this was a precaution for day time only and that the night staff would remove the card and secure the car park we did not check it again. But to our horror early the following morning the card was still in place and, according to the staff, always is. This meant that our car and all our belongings were not secure in the car park. Perhaps we should have paid more attention to this when we arrived and discussed it more with the staff but we were tired and needed feeding and a good night’s sleep.
Anything that we didn’t like, apart from the car park – No. Would we stay again – Yes.
