With a limited number of days and numerous great choices in the Luberon area, the question for us was whether this would turn out to be a high effort low return destination. The effort turned out to be reasonable. From Bonnieux, the climb up to the top of the plateau was no more than 100m in altitude, and the drop down to the parking area no more than 200m. We took the short way down, south on d943, from the intersection of d943 and d232. I would recommend this stretch of road only for descending as the grade is very steep, the road is winding, and the traffic is heavy. We took the road up through Buoux town and up to d232 then west to d943 then south to d232 and Bonnieux as our return route. One could use this route both ways as the additional climbing above Buoux is minimal and the grade is much easier, although the distance is several Ks longer. Total distance for the loop from Bonnieux and back was about 30K, all very scenic. The main takeaway is that the climb out from the fort is not that bad.
Fort de Buoux itself is a world class attraction. This is quite an impressive site... I can only imagine what the place would be like if King Louis had not gotten worked up and attacked it. The entire area is worth the ride just for the beauty of the limestone canyons, and the fort just puts it completely over the top. All in all, not be missed.
