Restaurant at the Auberge de Carcarille

This Auberge has a very nice restaurant, which in summer is split onto two different terraces. I believe the people staying at the Auberge on a meal plan probably sit on one of the terraces and outside guests sit on the other. Both are very nice.

We had dinner here one evening while staying in Gordes and had a lovely meal. The service was professional yet friendly. The tables were spaced far enough apart so that you are not listening to other people’s conversations. There was even a big group near us and we were not bothered by them at all and the fact that there was a group did not slow down the service for us. The restaurant has the amount of staff that they need.

The food is excellent and nicely presented. My husband and I had the lamb and the filet mignon and both were prepared perfectly.

The entrance to the auberge is spectacular and very welcoming. All in all, it was a perfect evening.

We stayed here after having arrived in Gordes with nowhere booked. It was lovely, the staff were friendly and the rooms bright, clean and spacious with a nice terrace. We had asked for availability in many other similarly appointed hotels and this was by far the best value and the staff were the friendliest - I really couldn't see why places just down the road were more expensive. A group of us had dinner in the hotel which was good, not great though. If you do want to stay in a hotel in Gordes - stay here - we visited virtually every other hotel and this was the best.

We have stayed here many, many times over and each time our stay improves. The hotel is wonderful with a lovely pool and well tended gardens, and the staff are always excellent - friendly, helpful and a good laugh! The food at Carcarille is incredible; fresh, innovative and always delicious. The regular attendance from local residents only further supports this - you know it's good if the locals are always there! The rooms are immaculate, spacious and relaxing which is perfect after a days walk or a lovely evening feast. Really cannot recommend Carcarille highly enough, you won't be disappointed.

This is a lovely hotel. Our room was modern (think bathroom!) and clean with a view on the garden. Above all it was spacious which is rare in European hotels. Yet it retains the Provencal country house look. The staff was friendly and competent and the food was good. The location is lovely but may be too isolated for those wanting some night life. It is just a few miles from the towns of Gordes and Roussillon as well as the Village des Bories. And the Fontaines de Vaucluse are not too far away.

I'll start out by saying that I sympathize with DomFun but my expectations are tempered by the movie "A Good Year" where Marion Cotillard's character tells Russell Crowe: "In France, the customer is always wrong." It's a funny and poignant moment that is so very telling about the French. That said, I enjoyed our time at Carcarille - and we even had a little bumpiness from the guy whom I presume is the manager.

The poor people of Provence. They need the tourist euro to make a living, which means they must put up with all sorts of people invading their quiet rural life. Having lived in Hawaii, I kind of understand their frustration. At times, our man in question was brusque and almost rude - but one of the main ingredients in getting upset about situations like this is actually letting that persons comments make you upset.

Fact is that I was in The Luberon, at the foot of Gordes, it's beautiful, it's quiet and I'm with an amazing woman and the accessibility of amazing wine and food stretches out at my feet - why would I ever allow the typical French brusque-ness invade my enjoyment? He's expecting the "Ugly American" - I'm not that kind of person and I'm not going to succumb.

We stayed in Room 30 at the end of June and overall, our stay was wonderful. Our brusque man might have been brusque, but he was actually nice in many ways. The first night, we came late to dinner and he accommodated us. They held a table for us. They were nice about most things and even though he thought our room was like a refrigerator, we had a great time there.

It's true, the Wi-Fi only works by the main lobby and on the terrace/hallway. Bring your laptop or suffer using the French-keyboarded Windows PC computer. That machine must be loaded with all sorts of malware because it's slower than life in Provence and those of you used to a QWERTY keyboard may likely shove a shiv in your neck trying to use the keyboard.

But really, The Luberon is too wonderful to waste your time on the computer. Forget the e-mails, forget the computer - go out and see it all!

The room was spacious and had separate bath and toilet. Our room was cleaned and stocked daily and was nicely appointed with king bed, writing table, couch and outdoor patio looking out towards Gordes. Lovely.

Since my French is quite poor, I had to ask a friend to communicate with the Auberge to clarify our reservations. The base price of the room is 70 euros, but they expect you to pay $192 euros a night for two people - this includes two meals per day for each of you. You can choose to have two out of the three meals offered per day: breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Dinner is highly recommended.

To state it simply: I like food. I travel to taste foods. Carcarille's restaurant is very good and bordering on excellent. Our meals were both delicious and a bit adventurous. Lamb brains, anyone? Quite good, by the way. The wine list is well thought out and the suggestions offered by the staff were never bank-breaking and were spot-on.

So, 192 euros for two people? It's not cheap, but it's not bad either. If you take advantage of the two meals, it's a pretty decent deal. The problem is if you want to venture out and about - head to Marseille and do you stay there for dinner or come back to Carcarille? You've already paid for the Carcarille dinner.

Perhaps the better compromise is to buy a few nights with the meals and a few without. Our biggest mistake was only planning three full days in Provence. A proper holiday requires no less than two weeks!

We plan on returning to Provence and a few nights at Carcarille will most certainly be on our itinerary.
