“Good hotel in quiet and convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

I last visited this hotel about 20 years ago and now find the rooms nicely modernised with comfortable beds, fresh linen and generous supplies of white towels each day. Hotel is quiet and rooms overlooking the bay, albeit with a few buildings in front, are definitely worth the extra cost. Still has the quirky tiny lift and homely breakfast area on shaded terrace but a good buffet with copious amounts of pastries etc and home made marmalade. Close to town and harbour but quite a steep climb. Regular buses run from road above a short walk away and cost just one Euro for any journey. We went to Monte Carlo and to Cap Ferrat for just one Euro each and had to wait no longer than 20 minutes. Train also runs along the coast and is about a 10 minute walk away. No need for a hire car - you'd pay more to park it than a whole journey by bus or train which connect into the airport with one change.

Room Tip: Take a room with a sea view rather than village side which backs onto road

We stayed for 4 nights, and , as we expect in French hotels, the room is small, but the level of cleanliness of the room itself, the bed linen, towels etc was exceptional. It was our first experience of staying in a 2 star hotel--everywhere else was booked out- and we were very impressed. The Breakfast (€10) was wonderful also, the freshest croissants, and home made marmalade from the orange trees in the hotel garden. Highly recommended gem.

We stayed for a week in a triple room, it was very spacious, with great views overlooking the bay and we even had our own patio to sit out on even though it was quite small.
Though the room was one of the dated rooms, it was always cleaned to a high standard.
The only downsides were, no fridge, and the air conditioning was. It strong enough for a room that size, a room that size really needed two air conditioning units.
I did get to see some of the renovated rooms and once the whole hotel has been updated, I would not hesitate and stay there again!

1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012 via mobile

I arrived in villefranche late on a Saturday evening in August and was faced with an almost fully booked town. My boyfriend and I fell in love with this sleepy sea side village so scoured the town looking for ANY room that would keep us there.

I walked into the lobby of Le Provencal Hotel and it was fine on first impression, basic but clean. I wasn't expecting much anyway from a two star hotel. When the receptionist told me they had a room free I was overjoyed but asked if I could see the room before I paid. I was so glad that I was cautious.

The room that I walked into was definitely the dirtiest hotel room I have ever been in. It sent shivers down my spine. The bed was collapsed in the centre and had old thread borne, flowery linen on it. The carpets were brown and old. There is no way on earth I was going to stay there. I would have slept in our rental car quicker.

I have seen a picture of one of the rooms here on tripadvisor but it looks like a different hotel. Maybe the standards of rooms vary wildly.

Do NOT stay here!

We loved our time here, preferred to stay in VilleFranche rather than Nice as not so crowded, but only 1 Euro on the bus into Nice, or Monaco. Beautiful views and beautiful beach. The hotel was quite basic but very clean, nice views and a stroll to water, and cafe's. There is a slight hill to walk up back to hotel. It took about 5 mins and is a nice walk, but for those who are not mobile, it could be a bit hard. Great pizza across the road and patisserie on corner, as well as a supermarket one street away. Lovely Breakfast and worth the money. No fridge in room, which is quite normal in France, but the hotel will put win etc in their fridge and you can get when you need. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Pay to get the ocean view

The only reason we booked this hotel was because of its location. We had been to Villefranche a few years earlier, and wanted to live as close to the old town as possible. This is the advantage of the Provencal. It will only take you a couple of minutes to walk into the old town, where all the restaurants are located. Walking to the beach will take about 10 minutes.

Apart from the location and very friendly staff, this hotel does not offer much. It´s pretty run down, and in need of a serious refurbishment - inside as well as outside. However, the rooms are spacious and clean, and will therefore accommodate most visitors, as you rarely spend much time in the room anyway. Villefranche simply has too much to offer for time being spend in a hotel room!

The hotel serves a simple and overpriced breakfast (EUR 10), which consists of bread, cheese, ham and overcooked eggs. I would recommend that you have breakfast elsewhere - and there is plenty of places to be found in the old town.

Room tip - ask for room 304. This is the best room - a corner room facing the bay of Villefranche. Not much of a balcony I am afraid, but then again this is not that kind of hotel.

Room Tip: Room 304 - facing the bay. In fact, all rooms facing the bay should be in demand.
