“Recent Family Stay at Provencal.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

I recently stayed at Hotel Provencal ( 8 people ) 2 grandparents , 2 adults and 4 young children. I am a regular in Villa Franche so the the town is great the hotel is positioned at the top of the old town ( which means a 10 minute walk to to the beach) or check bus number 80 (a small bus that runs a few times to the trainstation/nice beach on a limited schedule). The hotel i would rate as a clean high 2 star low 3 star rating. The rooms are reasonible altough fairly basic.

Room Tip: If you are limited in your mobilty this may not be the hotel of choice. Bus 80 runs to the beach/tra...

We made a last minute booking to stay here as were renting a house in Grasse but wanted to have dinner with a friend here. My only real complaint is the lack of parking, but there is a public car park 150m away. Although you may need to queue to wait for a park to become available. Our room had wooden floors and was clean and tidy. Air con was very good. Bathroom just has a shower over bath. Bed is not large and fairly firm but ok linen. Wee were very happy it was a short downhill walk to bars and restaurants at the port. To be honest, we wouldn't normally stay at a 2 star hotel but this was absolutely fine and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Also, because we just arrived , had dinner with our friend, slept and left again, we didn't use any of the hotel services so can't comment on them.

We had a great view of the bay from our small balcony on the top floor at Hotel Provencal.
There is a very small elevator but we are still fit enough to use stairs. The room was large and nicely decorated and bathroom was roomy( with a bidet ) but you need step into the bath to have a shower. We chose to buy breakfast from a nearby pastisserie but breakfast was available at the hotel for a price. The disadvantage is the lack of CAR PARKING , this is not the fault of the hotel and is a common problem in the whole town.We luckily scored a spot around the corner near a soccer field. It costs €3.30 for a maximum of 3 hours and you have to top it up once the time has expired. This means every three hours you have to purchase a new ticket for the car dashboard, a little difficult if you have plans for the day.It is ,however, free between 7 pm and 9 am and on weekends. The lack free wi fi at the hotel can be resolved by going across the road to the bar La Regance. Villefranche sur Mer is a gorgeous place away from the chaos in Nice, check out the Citadel and the Volti museum and take a cruise up the coast to see Monaco. On Saturdays there is a great produce market to browse and salivate at.

I liked this hotel. It reminded me of my childhood trips. They still have very large key chains for their room keys. Blue shutters and white doors that open to the balcony. From your balcony you can see the orange trees and watch the birds. The rooms are decorated in a very simple way. The bathroom will take you back to the 70s (in a good way). It was functional and clean so I can't complain. I think bathroom needs a little more storage area around the sink though. Simplicity also means no wifi.

The check-in was very quick. There is no designated parking area for the hotel but we were able to find parking each day around the hotel. The location of the hotel was pretty good. It is quite a hike from the main attraction area but not too bad.

This hotel is very charming if you don't mind having just basics. Ask for a room with a view to make it worth it.

We have stayed here now 3 times over the last 6 years when visiting Monaco and the Historic Grand Prix. Superb value located in the beautiful town of Villefranche, overlooking the bay. Breakfast was taken in the garden. Ask for a room with a sea view and, if available, a ‘turret’ room. A short walk to the station and then a 15 minute train journey takes you to Monaco along the beautiful coast line. Excellent choice of reasonably priced restaurants in town.

We spent one night in this hotel before moving into our villa. The room we were in was extremely small but this is pretty consistent with most French hotels in this price bracket. Really nothing too much to complain about. The breakfast was good and there was a nice ambience drinking coffee on the terrace amid the vines. Everything is within walking distance which is a good job as once you found a nearby parking spot you really don't want to give it up. Villefranche itself is a pretty town with a slower pace than Nice.

Room Tip: Leave your large bags in the car - the elevator/lift is very small!
