“Truly "Welcome" in Southern France”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Our "Spring Break" in Villefranche-sur-Mer was delightful -- and not because it wasn't really spring!! My husband and I had hoped for sun -- but not this time! HOWEVER, we loved the "Hotel Welcome" and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit southern France. This hotel had the best view -- right onto the water (unlike anything I saw in Nice). It was quiet -- we slept with our window open every night. The staff was truly excellent -- professional always, but warm and friendly -- they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Our room was perfect -- a nice size -- not huge, but roomy, with lots of storage space for clothes -- shelves, as well as closet space, and drawers in the night stands. The queen-sized bed was very clean and comfortable, with a lovely duvet -- high quality. The bathroom was also roomy, with a great shower (in a tub, but shielded with a "half" shower door) -- never a problem with hot water. They even provided L'Occitane Lemon Verbena shower gel & shampoo in dispensers on the shower wall, and (presumably the same brand) lemon hand soap bar -- they all smelled so good! The sink was large, also, which was nice. They had a great hair dryer as well. The balcony off of our room was nice, too, even though we didn't get to use it very much due to the rain (boo!) -- but we'll be back to try it again -- this time later in the spring!
The location of the hotel was truly ideal -- steps away from about 10 different restaurants and all the shopping, as well as being right across from the water and about 1/4 mile from the beach (which we'll use next time....).
A special note is the housekeeping help we had -- I wish we knew her name! She was wonderful. She took such good care of us, going always above and beyond what we could possibly have expected.
This was a great hotel -- we highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the water!

I am very late in writing this review, but still I need to recommend this hotel!! My friend and I traveled to France at the very end of July last year. We finished off our trip here at Hotel Welcome. We loved everywhere we visited in France, but this village and hotel is really something special. We did NOT want to leave.

We booked somewhat late, so we were thrilled to even be able to get a room here. We ended up getting a small room on the 6th floor. It is decorated kind of like a cabin in a ship. Even though the room was tiny, our room was amazing…the reason being that since we were on the top, our balcony was totally secluded. All rooms here have a balcony, but the other balconies jut out and are visible from the street, while ours was tucked away. We had a sun screen that we could press a button and lower it down during the day (for shade), and raise at night. The view is awesome, day or night. It is magical to look out at night and see the boats and lights on the water. There was a nice table and two chairs to enjoy. I would actually prefer this room if I ever make it back to this village and hotel.

This was not an issue for us, but I thought I’d mention in case you have trouble with stairs. The elevator does not go to the 6th floor. So, you can take the elevator to the 5th floor, and then take the stairs up to the 6th. Again, this was not an issue for us. The staff was great and even carried our bags up for us, which was nice.

The location of the hotel is great. Obviously, it’s right on the water. There are numerous restaurants along the street to choose from. The hotel itself has an excellent wine bar on the street level. We sat outside at a table both nights and had a glass of wine. Actually, we thought we’d try a different place the second night, and realized that the wine bar is quite a gem. So we returned there anyway. In other words, the wine bar is awesome and not “just” a hotel bar. In fact, it’s an attraction in itself. There was a local man playing the guitar a little ways down the street and with people out walking, dining, and laughing, it was just as you would picture somewhere in the South of France.

Definitely explore the little side streets and alleys…they are full of small local stores and restaurants. We felt safe everywhere we went. The town was not over crowded with tourists like other places. That is one reason we chose this town over the more glitzy cities on the Riviera. I went on a walk or run by myself both days…explored the streets and ran on the road that goes along the beach. It was wonderful. The beach itself is very pretty and clean, and only a short walk from the hotel. It is pebbly, but not rocky. There are food stands by the beach where you can purchase food and drinks/beer.

My only “cons” of this hotel are the following: beach towel charge and spotty wi-fi.

I would stay here (Villefranche-sur-Mer and Hotel Welcome) again in a heartbeat. It was nice to visit somewhere laid back but still gorgeous!! Next time we'll rent a boat for the day!

Room Tip: LOVED the very top (6th floor) cabin room. Small, but a GREAT view with a secluded balcony overlooki...

We booked this hotel because of the good recommendation on trip advisor, and we were not disapointed. The staff were lovley, very friendly and helpfull, its a long time since I have witnessed this in an hotel. Our room on the 4th floor was small, but with a balcony and wonderful views, however the walls were quite thin, and you could hear the people in the next room talking , and at one point when trying to sleep noise from the televsion, this problem was solved by a call to reception, and no further noise was experienced. We did not use the bar as we felt the wine prices were excessive 50 euros for the most basic wine which in the U K would cost about £18.00 but then French hotels and restaurants do seem to overcharge on the wine, which surpising as they produce the stuff. We also felt that 17 euros for breakfast a bit over the top, and when we realsied we could get an adequate breakfast at the local resturants fo 6 to 8 euros, we ate breakfast out. Having said those negative remarks, we would stay here again as it is in the most perfect location for a town hotel. We cant explain it but there is something magical about the place, less hustle and bustle of other towns on cote d azur, but within easy reach by bus or train of Nice, Monaco, Menton etc, and the public trainsport is so cheap, and runs on time.

Part of me wants to keep this hotel our little secret. We lucked out and selected this charming hotel on Trip Advisor and boy was it a brilliant choice.

The location in ville franche' sur-mer between Nice and Monte Carlo is simply magical! It is not overrun by tourists like some other cities on the Cote d' Azur. You can easily access Monaco, Nice, Cannes, St. Tropez all from here. Why stay in over priced, touristy cities when you could stay minutes away here! It's a no brainer. You would be crazy to stay anywhere else.

The rooms are well appointed with L'Occitance Toiletories, breakfast was very nice, room service was very prompt and polite. The views from the rooms are Simply Breathtaking! You feel like you're in heaven.

You absolutely have to check out the street of Ville Franche' sur mer and the church right behind the hotel. Lovely restaurants are right below you on the seafront.

Olivier at reception gave us a wonderful welcome, he made our honeymoon really special. We will be back.

We opted for the large family room on the first floor with a huge balcony overlooking the sea. It's expensive but is one of the best family rooms we have ever experienced and very nicely decorated. The views are brilliant and great for photography and people watching. Staff were very friendly and helpful and made you feel very welcome. Breakfasts were very nice but again expensive (but it is the south of France). There is a great choice of restaurants all in walking distance and the beach again is 5 minutes walk. You don't need a car here as the train service is also very good. We went to Monaco for the day and it made us realise how wonderful Villefranche is. Make sure you visit the Chapelle Saint Pierre which was amazingly decorated by Jean Cocteau and also spend time wondering around the backstreets and little squares etc. We would come back here again anytime.

We returned this fall for another wonderful stay at the Hotel Welcome, this time for two nights. Much has been written by me and other travelers about the hotel's location and wonderful views, and this time, I want to compliment the hotel's management and staff. This is a popular hotel that needs to be booked well in advance, but the people who work there treat their guests like the hotel is a start up and they are building a reputation. I hope that makes sense. I'm trying the describe that when you stay at the Hotel Welcome, you feel like you are the only guest they have and they know you. From the minute you walk in the door, you are greeted with a warm smile and gracious service, and I feel that management went a bit beyond what is necessary this year. Within a half an hour of our arrival in Nice, my husband's wallet was pickpocketed at the Nice St. Augustin train station. One of our credit card companies was able to get us a replacement card within three days of our reporting the loss, but someone needed to sign for it. After our two nights in Villefranche, we were moving to Cannes for a convention, and there wouldn't be anyone in our apartment building who could do this for us. We were not going to be guests of the Hotel Welcome at the time of the delivery, but the staff graciously agreed to accept the package. They called us when the package arrived and all was well. Not only was management very helpful in solving our problem, but these were people that we were more than comfortable asking to do this for us. That comfort level came from the great service and personal attention we have enjoyed during our stays at the Hotel Welcome, and we will be going back for another stay.

Room Tip: All of the rooms at the Hotel Welcome have balconies on the front of the building. We have been luc...

We had a lovely stay at the Hotel Welcome, the staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Our room had stunning views overlooking the bay and was very comfortable. The hotel is in a wonderful peaceful location, with plenty of restaurants within a short walking distance. We would definitely return when we are back in the region.

Room Tip: Overlooking the bay
