We have stayed at the Chateau St. Martin a total of 5 times, however, this latest visit was the first in the very high season (end of July), and I found it to be less pleasant and all round less satisfying than prior visits.
The grounds are still beautiful and the rooms are large and quiet. However, small gestures that made management appear particularly attentive in prior years were lacking this time. No welcome fruit plate in the room upon arrival for example. The lounge chairs on our private terrace were dirty and rather tired-looking, and the ash tray on the terrace had not been cleaned (cigarette butts). All no drama, but not what one would expect or was used to from prior years.
The really annoying aspect of this stay though was the sun bed reservation nonsense around the pool. After check in and a long journey, I wondered over to the pool in the late afternoon, looking forward to a quiet nap. All the sun beds had a small "reserved" sign on the table next to them, but only very few were occupied. No attendant was on site so I reclined on one of the "reserved" sun beds and fell asleep, only to be woken up by the pool attendant, shaking my arm and telling me that I couldn't sleep there as the bed was reserved. Most beds around the pool were still empty and noone was attempting to "claim" my chair.
Upon my asking how one went about reserving a chair, the attendant in very poor English told me that one had to speak to him or his colleague in advance. I asked if I could stay on this chair since whoever reserved it didn't show, he said no and instead pointed me to a place in Siberia/across the lawn which was "available" for me. He was not one bit apologetic, but rude and borderline condescending. I tried to question this approach and asked again about all the other empty chairs, just to be told that 10 of them had been reserved by the owner's family, and the others had been reserved by regular guests. His English was too poor to engage any further.
Needless to say, one does not really expect to spend E700 per night for a room to find oneself being woken up/arguing with a rude pool attendant or to deal with such pool chair reservation nonsense in general. The next few days were much the same. All chairs around the pool "reserved" without necessarily being occupied.
