There's no lack of quality hotels in St Tropez - and we've stayed in a lot over the years - but the Sube is different. Luxury it's not: the rooms, while immaculately clean and perfectly presented, are small and even the best (i.e. those facing the harbour) are cramped and fairly basic. And, the hotel's facilities are absolutely minimal - no restaurant, no guest lounge, no parking... pool? gardens? concierge?... forget it.
So why five stars? First off, it has the best location of any hotel in the centre of St Tropez because it's not only right in the heart of where all the action is but it's the only one that faces the harbour. Which means that if you choose one of its front rooms you get a million dollar view from your (very small) balcony. And secondly, it has, without doubt, the best bar in St Tropez... huge, stuffed full of wonderfully relaxing "old style" leather chairs and walls crammed full of "yachtie" pictures, oozing genuine atmosphere, and located on the first floor to give you the same million dollar view.
So, even if you're not in one of the front rooms, you get a charmingly simple, home made breakfast in the bar with time to soak in its views (open exclusively to residents until around 10.30 am) and, in the evening, you can enjoy its fantastic "pure St Tropez" feel safe in the knowledge that your bed is only a few steps away. And, of course, because the rooms are what they are it is, in St Tropez terms, amazingly good value.
Family run for decades it still retains the ramshackle "chic" that made St Tropez what it is... but enjoy it while it lasts because one day someone will convert it into an incredibly expensive, fully soundproofed, beautifully appointed but soul-less, designer hotel precisely because of its unique, world-class location... and, it won't be as good.
