Owner description: It took Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, one of the most original women on the French Riviera, seven years to build one of the most beautiful sites on the Côte d’Azur. An enlightened art enthusiast who travelled back and forth across France and Europe, Béatrice de Rothschild built up an incomparable and eclectic collection of masterpieces: priceless Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, works by Fragonard, paintings by the masters (Boucher, Carpaccio, Tiepolo, etc.), Louis XVI furniture, and so on.

“Best gardens I have ever seen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

The house at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is impressive enough but it is nothing compared to the gardens. They are truly magnificent. They are laid out in a formal style divided up into sections representing different countries/cultures. The centrepiece though is the water feature, a long pond containing many fountains that are set to music. The whole garden is very well laid out and the plants and flowers are superb. A must see garden.

“Enjoyable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

We arrived early in the morning, found plenty of free parking and started our visit. Since we arrived just after opening, it was quiet. We paid for our tickets and received the audio tour. Traveler tip: Bring headphones, you can generally plug them into the audio device and thus you do not have to hold the device during your visit. :)

The audio tour was helpful in appreciating the villa. We listened to a majority of the information. The villa was quite beautiful. Lots of ornate decorations and antiques. The story of the family was also interesting.

The gardens are certainly impressive. We enjoyed the view from the villa on the open porch. Since it was summer, the fountains played with music every hour. We enjoyed a few of the shows during our time there.

My husband and I spent around 2 hours visiting the villa and the gardens before heading to Nice for the day.

Worth a visit: Yes! Especially if you have a car.

“Beautiful gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

The gardens are very beautiful and the excursion itself is really a picuresque and relaxing experience, worth a visit! You also get a free audio gide for the tour in the villa itself, which is very informative and interesting. The experience is really worth the 12,50€ you pay.

“Exquisite and elegant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

An easy bus ride (bus number 81) from Nice drops you at the bottom of the driveway to the Villa. Reasonably priced for families(given one child gains free entry with 2 adults and 1 additional child.) The children were well catered for with an activity book to keep them occupied in the gardens. The extravagance and opulence of the gardens is something to see including the fountain that dances to music every 20 minutes. The villa has a sugary effect painted and dressed in frilly pink. Beautifully restored and kept. We wouldn't have missed this for anything.

“Lovely morning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

We took the 81 bus to the stop at Passable and walked up to the entrance (about 100m). 12.50 euro each to get in (and no cheaper for pensioners).

Then (with a passport or driving licence) you get an audio guide of the house. As you reach each room there is a stand with a number which you enter into the audio guide. it then tells you all about what you are seeing and you can go round the house in any order.

You can view the ground and first floor of the house (I read on here that the first floor is not accessible but it was on the day we went). Filled with amazing items.

For me the only disappointment was that the garden did not have audio descriptions like the house, which must be possible and would greatly add to the visit to these. We really went for the gardens and they are impressive. The water garden to music is clever and all the different gardens are themed, italian, stone, spanish etc. Finally the salon du the where we went inside (for the air conditioning) and had a lovely pear tart with tea (12.30 euros for a shared tart, a pot of tea for one and an espresso). A couple of hours was enough for us and then the 81 bus back into Villefranche sur mer in 10 mins.
