“The food is fabulous...the wine can be questionable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

Have eaten twice here and the food has been great both times.

On this occasion we both had the Brie with cepes to start. One of the best cheeses I have ever tasted....and yes this is a cheese restaurant and you can eat it for every course if you wish!

For the main we had the Linguine Gregoire, the house special, where the pasta is tossed in a hollowed out Parmesan cheese and flambeed with cognac..delicious. However if you like Risotto do yourself a favour and have the Risotto with green peppercorns, it really is sublime.

Oh and the dessert, the Tarte Citron, unlike any I have ever tasted in France but mouthwateringly good.

A word of caution, there are numerous wines and they are big on organic, the first time we went we allowed the waiter to pair a wine with our meal, which we found sour and unappetising. On our second visit we choose a bottle that was cloudy and tasted of apples- not good. I would recommend buying by the glass to avoid a costly mistake.

As other reviewers have described, the ambience is quite special and the food good value. Go there!

“Very good cheese, acceptable Fondue”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

+ Nice ambiance
+ Very good cheese and good knowledge
+ Good vine

-/+ often fully booked
- the Fondue had really too much alcohol
- service was ok but could have been more attentive

“Cheesed off.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

We had some vague memories of good reviews for this restaurant but, after several trips to Nice, this was our first visit. We arrived at 8pm to find the restaurant door locked. Odd - but soon opened. We were shown downstairs to what was an empty area of the restaurant. We ordered some wine. Great store was made of "natural wines with no sulphites". The wine arrived with the label clearly stating that the wine contained sulphites. This was explained as being a natural process and may well be, but didn't add to my feeling of well being about the establishment. The soup special was luke warm and my wife's tagliatelle a huge bowl of pasta with a small spoon of sauce. The cheeses were good but the accompanying glasses of wine parsimonious. The manager/owner was good enough to deduct the cost of the pasta. We have eaten at many other Nice restaurants which, frankly, put Le Bistrot du Fromager to shame.

“Spectacular”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

After sifting through the endless number of restaurants in Nice we decided to rely on the plethora of outstanding reviews for Le Bistro du Fromager. And I can wholeheartedly say they were not misleading.

We had a spectacular meal in a spectacular setting. The perfect balance of meat, vegetables and unbelievably delicious cheeses. The waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating. The historic cellar had charm and ambiance. The wine was delightful. And the prices were more than fair. A great find in Nice, in France - and in the world for that matter.

Highly recommended!
