“Well worth the detour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Nice old building with a reasonable selection of artwork, considering that you`re in a beach resort! If the weather is poor, it makes a good distraction for a couple of hours. Plenty of interest with mixed bag from Mossa, Dufy, Monet, Sisley, Breughel, Rodin & Moreau, You must check out the veil sculpture which is unreal. I have seen some cracking stuff in my time, and this is right up there on technical execution. Masterly.

“Not so good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

I have to agree with a previous reviewer and say what a disappointment this was.
We walked all the way from the old port, quite a way on a hot afternoon expecting something rather special, instead we wandered about for 20 minutes or so wondering what we were looking at, there's no help for non French speaking visitors and the promised Matisse work was either not marked or not there.
The old building is kind of interesting but not worth the trip just to see that alone, so for us, it's a fail.

“Poor value for money, Matisse exhibition with almost no Matisse on show.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013 via mobile

Usually free entry but had to pay 10euros entry as special Matisse event in Nice. Entry charge covers 8 museums but not staying in Nice long enough to visit others. No single entry charge available. This museum had almost no Matisse and not much else either. Grumpy staff. Waste of money.

“Some unusual artists, not many works on display”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Given that this museum purports to have 6,000 works of art, there are not very many on display.

The symbolist works by Gustave Mossa, a Nice-born artist, were new to me and every intriguing though dark in subject matter. The Cheret is frothy and pastel by comparison. I liked both artists very much.

The building, a stately Nicoise villa, is quite something. Staff ranged from hatched-faced to personable. Gardens outside are popular with local dog owners.

I am still annoyed that these usually free museums cost €10 for a week-long pass this summer, ostensibly as part of 'l'ete de Matisse'.

“Definitely worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

After visiting so many of the other museums in Nice it was nice to see some more conventional art - and especially the largest canvases which had a real dramatic impact. But probably the most interesting was the range of sculptures - how do you sculpt a face covered by a veil? I also particularly enjoyed the drawings and paintings by Moreau which are part of the temporary exhibition
