“What a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

The team at the hostel were extremely welcoming and helpful. The hostel is a little way out of town but there is a regular shuttle bus that will pick you up the tram stop. We booked a private room and got one on the top floor that opened onto a wide balcony with a view over the town and down to the sea. Bathroom facilities and beds were basic but clean.

Room Tip: Book a private room and ask for one with a view!

We stayed for 6 nights in this hostel. Firstly, our room was not cleaned for the entire stay. There was a tiny bin in the bathroom which was not even emptied. The shower leaked through the walls and made our whole room sticky and wet. The location also was not great. The shuttle to the tram stopped running between 12pm and 5pm. It did take us around 15 minutes to walk to the tram stop. From the tram stop it is around 20 minutes into the centre. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was good, but the cleanliness of the room was a major problem.

Location: A bit far away from the center of Nice. That being said, the walk to the tram station is really easy and the hostel provides as shuttle service to the tram stop as well.
Service: We had a few issues, but nothing major. When we arrived they told us that we were going to need to switch rooms after 1 night. Not a big deal. They told us we could check in to our new room at 3. The next morning as we were checking out of the old room they told us we could not check in until 4. Again--not a big deal but they kind of acted as if we were doing them a favor. When we tried to check into the new room they could not locate a booking for 3 nights, they could only find one for 2. So I had to get the reservation confirmation--I recommend bringing this with you so that you can smooth over any scheduling issues. One day our keys randomly de-activated so we had to fix that as well. So basically each day there was a small scheduling detail but nothing too major. Almost everyone who worked there was really friendly so dealing with these small issues was not a big deal. Remember you are dealing with a hostel not a hotel.
Atmosphere: Definitely the most redeeming part of this hostel. Everybody is very open to meeting new people and there is a huge variety of people. If you don't feel like going into town you can definitely hang out here. Its nice to take advantage of their very cheap happy hour.
Rooms: Clean! Nothing to special but with a hostel all I want is cleanliness--not looking for luxury. Some of them have great views! Its important to note that this is an all ages hostel so you may want to book your room with that in mind.
All in all, I would recommend!

It's was a wicked hostel and I met lots of great people here. There is free wifi in all the rooms and also heaps of computers so you don't miss out or have to wait! The staff are really helpful and give some great ideas for day trips etc. 10 out of 10!

All in all the stay wasn't unpleasant, below I'll list the goods with bads.

LOCATION: its a fair way out of nice with an easy downhill walk to the tram station. Shuttle runs during the day to take you there. However getting back, the shuttle does not run between 12 and 5. The walk back from the tram station after a half hour.tram ride was grueling. Would be a major negative in summer, lucky it was only 20 degrees that day. But on a positive great views. Major negative was the fact it was so fair away from everything.

SERVICE AND DINNER. most staff very friendly and helpful especially bartenders. Only negative with most of them was no one really new much about the museums and so forth in town which is foegivable. What was highly un forgivable was the chef. He was always late with dinner which wasn't a bother. But the bartender printed our ticket Nd said check with him in 15 minutes. So 20 minutes later my fiance politely went out there and asked the chef how far off dinner was. He proceeded to yell at her in a very aggressive tone, told her to go away and come back later. I'm sorry but if you hate your job QUIT. Food was good but not good enough to justify that. And there was a giod possibility both myself and my partner got sick from it as from 2 hours after dinner and continuing over the next 2 days both of us were scared to even chance passing gas.

CLEANLINESS: All in all pretty good apart from one thing, after using the toilet in our private bathroom I went to pull the brush out to scrub the inside bowl only to fined the brush covered in what I can only describe as growing human excrament sitting in its small puddle of what was once water, which looked like it hadn't been cleaned or emptied in well over a month.

ROOM: the room its self was ok though the double bed we had was quite uncomfy and we couldn't have adult time without the bed making huge amounts of noise . Shower was so small I couldnt turn to wash myself without knocking the mixer tap to cold and I'm a thin bloke. Shower also flooded bathroom. But view from window was amazing. Though room had no safe or locker which was concerning.

BAR: bar was great, house beer was cheap even out of happy hour and computers in the area where excellent except for a aggressive cat which comes in and hogs bar stools........

All in all for single backpackers maybe this would be great but as a couple I was heart broken to find out I could have got a nicer room right in nice in a good hotel for an extra 10 euro a night. i would have nearly said id stay here again but the chef kind of ruined the hole expirience for us and this is an issue i will be following up with the hostel to. Also if you have a flight outside of public transport hours and you to get to or from the airport your stuffed. The hostel charges a whopping 40 euro to take you there in the shuttle which is only 10 euro cheaper than a taxi and is your only option.

We found this hostel experience absolutely wonderful. What hostel offers a free shuttle from the tram? (There are other options to cover this distance - there is a shortcut by foot; there is also a bus). The free breakfast is quite adequate. There is free coffee and tea at all times. The cooking area is quite generous. The large common room (which includes a bar and dining room) was the chapel of the monastery and has a large stained glass window. There are many prints of famous paintings and enough of information on the artists to provide an education in art. The staff are helpful with information on Nice. The free walking tour led by James from the hostel is full of gems of information and is a good starting point for discovering Nice.
I believe that there are malicious hoax reviews of this hostel.
