“One night stay in Nice”

My wife and I stayed in the hotel Oct 7 after staying in Ville Franche Sur Mer for 10 days . The staff were friendly but the room we were given was less than satisfactory . While we were told it was small in advance we were not told that two people could not pass in the room . It was awful!!
In addition the carpet was dirty - very annoying .

Room Tip: Make sure you do not choose the 'small' room - might be cheaper but just pay the extra!

Good location in the charming old town. Friendly staff, and ok breakfast for being France.
But the room was terrible. Very small - only place big enough for an open suitcase is the bed. Smell of mold, which obviously came from black mold in the bathroom. Painting in bathroom roof was hanging in large flakes. Broken tiles in toilet. Lamps and aircon did not work and we didn't want to open the window for noice from the street. We got free breakfast but that was poor comfort since we had hard to sleep. Free wi-fi but it only worked in the reception.
Would not stay there again.

The friendly and well-informed staff made our stay delightful. They were particularly helpful with restaurant recommendations and reservations, walking directions, and public transit tips as well. Our room was small and clean. The hotel's location beneath a landmark tower on the edge of old town Nice made forays into the labyrinthine streets easy, and the proximity to the promenade Paillon greenway quite accessible too.

Room Tip: No elevator so be ready for steep stairs.

DO NOT STAY HERE! Staying at Hotel Villa la Tour almost ruined our vacation. We arrived at the hotel to find incredibly kind staff who promised we would get a nice room (101) with the biggest bed. He (Jerome) suggested there was one broken light in the room. Little did we know that several lights didn’t work; the fixtures and pictures were falling off of the wall; large holes and tears in the wallpaper, stained carpets and black mold covering the bathroom. BLACK MOLD! It was absolutely horrible.

We asked to change rooms (though we were met with resistance). The woman at the desk (Eva) seemed genuinely shocked that we were given the room in the first place. The new room (103) was larger but had disgusting food stains dried on the walls and carpet. The storage closet was broken and of no use. The pillows in the closet had no linens and what we thought were blood stains. The linens that were actually on the bed didn’t even fit: we used sofa cushions to sleep. And rowdy neighbors above us kept us awake the whole night.

When we asked to checkout early we were completely ripped off. Jerome said the upstairs guests were repeat problem customers (so, why let them stay?) and he would give us a free dinner if we stayed; but we wanted a clean room! He claimed we had the standard, and if that was so, we wanted to go. On the phone we agreed I would only pay for that one awful night. But later, he had his assistant (very sweet, but who didn't speak English) try to charge me for for 2 nights at a higher rate. We asked him to come in person. He previously seemed kind (though we doubt his sincerity, giving us room 101) but this was ludicrous. Completely frustrated and ready to LEAVE, we paid at least 100€ more than we should have (he used a variable rate, and despite this horrible hotel charged us 2 nights instead of 1).

Our experience was NOTHING like the charming reviews. We thought we had found a gem, and really, the location was awesome. We were disappointed beyond belief; such a hassle and disrespectful. We would guess only a few rooms (in the photos) are renovated. If this is the case, then don't give rooms that should be condemned to fair paying guests! The Hotel Villa la Tour was the absolutely worst part of our stay. I wouldn't even let my pets stay in the rooms we were assigned.

Room Tip: If you dare, then make sure you get a renovated room. Stay away from #101!!

I always try to be in the heart of the old town and this is one of the few hotels that can offer such a great location. The owner and staff are all very friendly and helpful and since I was here last a small restaurant has been added. Some rooms are a little bijou but have all you will need for your stay. Many have been refurbished and gradually it is becoming a very smart boutique hotel. I recommend room 103 at the front. As I said everything is close by as is a very fine wine bar just across the street. I will be back!

Room Tip: I like the rooms at the front, they can be a bit noisy with the windows open but the double glazing...

This hotel is definitely in a great location, right in the heart of old Nice, with loads of shops and restaurants and winding alleyways literally right behind the hotel. And the beach is an easy 10 min walk away.

I should also say, the front desk staff were for the most part quite good and very helpful to us on several occasions with info, recommendations re tours, etc. Although upon check out they had charged us for a breakfast we didn't eat (we had no breakfasts at the hotel at all) and the young fellow working said he couldn't do anything about it, that he couldn't remove the charge. Weird, right? So we had to pay it in order to check out. He took a note and said the hotel would contact me, but I've heard nothing in the weeks since. It's only 12 euro, but still, quite annoying. But it was early and we had to get to the airport so we didn't argue.

I am pretty laid back as far as hotels go - as long as they are safe and clean I am happy. I will say that this place felt nice and safe for us as two women travelling. But our room was not very clean at all...I found a large pecan and choc bar wrapper (that was def not ours) when we pushed the the twin beds apart a little bit. The bathroom floor always had a lot of hair, even after having been cleaned (again, most did not appear to be ours) and the plastic/glass shower walls always had a yicky film on them. The room has an old shag carpet that felt grungy as well as bedside tables that are so horribly stained, it looks like they are filthy and you really wonder why someone wouldn't take 5 minutes and swipe a paintbrush over them...lol. The lack of cleanliness was really our biggest issue with the room, though we managed to stick it out for a few nights. it was also very small and cramped for two people, even by European standards, but we expected that for the low rate they charge.

And I have to say, this was by far the noisiest hotel I've ever stayed in. I actually have hearing loss and usually sleep like the dead but mama-mia, what a racket goes on outside every night! From traffic, to people yelling all night, to motor bikes driving right up in front of the hotel to street cleaning at 3 am...really unbelievable, even with the shutters and window closed. Our room faced the front of the hotel, right above the entranceway, so maybe you could try to NOT be in one of those rooms. If I am commenting on it, trust me it was crazy loud.

We didn't have any meals at the hotel, as there are so many cute, local restos all around.

So all in all, I most definitely would NOT stay in this hotel again. We stayed in several hotels during our travels through France and Italy and this was easily the worst. It didn't ruin our visit to Nice, but it certainly didn't enhance it. We chose this hotel for the good reviews we had read, not for the low price - we would much rather have paid a little more and got something that was nice and most definitely cleaner!

A lovely little hotel in the old town area of Nice. An endless choice of restaurants within a short walking distance. Our room was excellent with air conditioning and free wifi. We were even upgraded to a room with a little balcony. Lovely, friendly staff and there is a cat!

Room Tip: We asked if a room with a balcony was available and were upgraded.
