“The most disappointing hotel in the world”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

On arrival the look was very dull and gloomy and looked very cheap for a 4 star hotel. The hotel staff were not useful and did not explain any of the room facilities. We were told by Aurelie who checked us in, we have been charged for an additional 2 nights on arrival because of an issue with the booking. On checking in we were given a room with an open toilet with no door. A bedroom is supposed to be hygienic to be able to sleep in to say the least regardless of how trendy it is. We asked to change our room and the second room had a bathtub in the centre. The entire room was flooding when we tried to switch it on as water started to pour out from everywhere even though we used 1 switch. The TV (or projector rather) was very complicated and we were not able to use it. When I tried to call the reception the phone lines did not work. Finally when we went downstairs to ask for towels and about food, we were told no food was served after 10 pm. There was only 1 member of staff at reception working in the entire hotel at this time. This did not make us feel safe at all, especially with our room being on the 1st floor and not having proper curtains we could hear and see everyone on the streets all night wondering what could happen if someone broke in especially with just 1 person at reception and with Nice not being the safest of places. The restaurant table had a worm crawling on it which had just come out a fruit basket that had obviously been kept there for sometime, when we went to order some drinks and the hotel was filled with mosquitos. The overall look of the room had a hospital feel, extremely gloomy. After the first night when housekeeping was done, they had kept the same towels and had not changed them. Also, there were no tables or chairs if you wanted to have a meal in the room. The smell in the corridors were of urine. On checkout we were promised to meet the management as we had made an appointment. To our surprise the manager did not show up.Therefore both the issue of our stay and the fact that we were charged unfairly for an extra period of 2 nights was not addressed as we had to catch a plane. On asking the staff member why this was the case politely, we were told "Excuse me please do not complain I have been working here all night and I am very tired" I am appauled by this kind of attitude and have travelled across the world and stayed at different accommodations from 3 to 5 star hotels and apartments and have never ever had someone speak to me like this. Personally I think the hotel should be closed down and it should not be listen by a website like booking.com as a reliable hotel. I have to this date not even received a communication from the hotel or apology despite all those problems. Also during this vacation I have stayed at a total of 6 hotels in Europe, out of which 4 were in France and this hotel would not ever compare to the others and is not at the same standard. It is far from a 4 star rating.

Room Tip: Dont book this hotel. The only good thing about it is the location.

I booked this hotel through Tablet Hotels, and remember seeing the interior of the space in a Hotel Design book I own. I was expecting the place to look very polished and clean like the photos, but was a bit disappointed upon arrival. The check in desk was very small, low lighting, and cheap looking curtains partitioned the area off. I saw the dining space, which was VERY different then the images I saw in the Hotel Design books. It looked like it was neglected and not taken care of. The room we had was the Monolith room, which was very large and spacious. However the shower and the toilet, had semi transparent glass, so there was no sense of privacy. You could also hear every conversation coming from the halls. The roof top was nice, but the pool was small. They had DVD covers in the main lobby, so I think you are able to rent out movies for your room? We also received fresh juice upon arrival, which was nice after the long train ride from Paris! I did like the location since it was off from the touristy area, and close to the train station. Overall good experience.

I would highly recommend reading up on this hotel before deciding to stay there. I didn't. The room we had was called the 'indoor terrace' with the contents if the room placed atop a wooden level (really hard to explain). It had a large transparent shower where it was literally impossible to have privacy as the other person can see you no matter where they are in the room. The room itself was clean but the hallways smelled funny and you can hear everything through the walls. The website leads you to believe that it has a rooftop pool, and I guess it does but it's more suited for two people rather than a hotel filled with guests. It's about the size of a hotub so you feel weird getting in if others are present. The beach is within walking distance and the hotel happens to have a restaurant with lounge chairs on the beach that you can rent for about 16 euro a person. I stayed at many four star hotels on this trip and I just found that this hotel was kinda cheesy and missed the mark.

Do not expect to stay in a 4 star hotel, as stated on Expedia, while at the Hi Hotel in Nice. The hotel room we were given from an Expedia package was so small that an ironing board would not fit in the room. When asked for what we reserved, a king bed, we were told that we could upgrade but for an additional 50 euro a night. Because we could not stay in the cruise ship sized room for another night we upgraded to the larger room at the extra cost.

The next room was larger but not to our liking. Where the Hi Hotel is trying to be trendy they are missing on conveniences most travelers, outside of hostel-goers, would expect. For instance, the television did not have a remote rather a highly confusing AV styled unit on the wall, the room did not have a shower just a bath, and the toilet area had no privacy (clear glass).

The hotel is convenient to most restaurants and bars and is 4 blocks from the beach, of which you have to pay for if you want to go to the Hi Beach. The front desk staff is very nice, to me though. I did witness an exchange between a front desk staffer and a guest where the front desk rudely informed the guest that "she was not the queen of this hotel," and that was after he hung up on her when she was complaining her in-room hair dryer was broken.

The housekeeping staff did an excellent job and should be commended on their quality work.

In summary, the hotel is way too expensive for what you get. Don't get pulled in by their trendiness and the unique look of their hotel. You will be inconvenienced and feel robbed by the money you are paying.

Dear Sir

Thank you for taking time to leave your comments however we are not totally agree with you

First, our hotel has been rated 4 stars hotel according to European laws. Then, you’re saying that our rooms are small but the smallest is 16 square meters. Of course, we have bigger rooms but they cost a little bit more. Also we would like to precise that our rooms are provided with a large bed.

You’re saying that The Technocorner room has no remote control but it does, maybe you haven’t seen it. And as everywhere, bathtub is provided with a shower. Toilets have glass but it is opaque.

Best Regards

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Hi Hotel. However, I would highly recommend that before booking you go to their website and understand that this is a unique hotel with design features that are not suitable for everyone. Since we had done our research before travelling, the hotel and room met our expectations. This was clearly not the case for the gentleman that was standing in the lobby yelling at the hotel staff about his room and the close (and exposed) proximity of the toilet to his bed. Unfortunately the hotel was sold out so they couldn't move this guest to another room and as a result our check-in was delayed as they attempted to educate this gentleman on the concept of the hotel. Unfortunately he just didn't get it!

The hotel staff are very friendly, speak English and once they were able to focus on us check in was quite easy. Our open plan room (#44) was small but had two large windows to allow lots of light in. We DID have a private toilet area so no issue there but keep in mind this room has an open concept so the sink and bathtub are part of the room. Moreover no separate bathroom. Closet space is almost non existent and space around the sink for toiletries is limited. The beds are firm, bed linens a little scratchy and shower is handheld. We enjoyed watching a DVD (free) from the hotels collection on our large screen projector tv one evening. The tub is massive (room for two) and the windows have automatic black-out shades if you need total darkness to sleep.

The rooftop pool is small but nice. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the beach and 15 minutes to the train station.

The Hi Beach Club is decent (€16 per day) but please note if you are not using their Beach Club or the rooftop pool towels are not provided for use at te public beach.

As previously mentioned if you understand this hotel before arriving you'll have a great time!

For us, it was nice to try something that was different from the standard hotel and as a result we had a unique and kind of cool experience staying at the Hi Hotel.

I have just returned from nice on friday and stayed at the hotel with my husband and 2 girls aged 3yrs and 1.5 yrs for 3 nights. I was very impressed with the hotel and our room which was an indoor terrace. It was very modern and contemporary (exactly how i like my hotel to be) and very clean, comfortable and central to all facilities. the staff were very helpful, at night they would provide me with warm milk free of charge and charged my husband's i-phone for him as we forgot the charger. we both really enjoyed the fact that the room was open plan apart from the toilet, as we were able to keep an eye on the children whilst having a shower. This was the first time in a very long time, i stayed in a 4 star hotel as usually we opt for 5 star and not once did i feel it could not have been a 5 star hotel. I really enjoyed the quirky facilities in the room - electric blinds, all light switchs were silver monochrome. the hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the pebble beach which you pay for and about 15 mins walk from the main centre with bars and restaurants. there were plenty of supermarkets, cafes, restaurants round the corner, leading upto the promenade de anglais. I wish we could have stayed longer and would return to the hotel. overall, we all thoroughly enjoyed our short break.

Pros:
Different themed rooms.
Unique concept.
Loungey feel.
Splendid location.
Friendly staff.
Discounted access to "private" beach.
Free internet.

Cons:
Rooms are not large and not suitable for all groups (definitely not recommended for families).
Rooms are very eclectic and may not suit a broad range of people.
Basic amenities are compromised to blend in with a theme or design (form over function)
Expensive and limited food options within hotel (although there are several eateries nearby)
Difficult to guage the room type by seeing pictures online.

Bottomline: If you are feeling adventurous and young, then by all means this is a good option to consider. It is a few blocks away from the world famous Promenade de Anglais, Place Mediteranee and Old Town.
