My wife and I just got back from a stay at the Boscolo Plaza Hotel in Nice in January, 2007. The first room we stayed in was terrible---it had a water view, which is nice on the surface, except that it's rather noisy at night. Much worse, the room smelled rather bad. We moved the next day to a less expensive room on the back of the hotel, facing away from the water. Although the decoration of the room was not that nice, and the bed was a little harder, the room was much better: It was quiet, and had no odor.

The desk staff was very pleasant. When my wife complained about the room, they showed her several other rooms we could choose from.

Breakfast at the hotel was ok, but nothing great. For some reason the staff there wouldn't let us sit at the tables we wanted to, and would always ask us to move to a different table when we sat down. Not exactly a first-class operation.

Also, be warned that there's no internet access in the rooms, although there is wireless available in the lobby. This is rather surprising for such an expensive hotel.

Overall, I can't recommend the Plaza, but it's a perfectly adequate place to stay if you can't find a better option.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights before staying in Monaco for a week, we stayed 1 night on our way home. The hotel purports to be a luxury 4 star. We booked online and got a good rate for a hotel of this rating ( we thought). When we arrive the only parking available was next store in a public car park for €30 per night. The Hotel looked impressive from the outside as did the lobby. The room we were given was tiny, with an unpleasant fust odour, the bed was akin to sleeping in a hammock and the light switch didn't work. 5 of th TV channels ( English ones) were not working. The safe was lying on the floor of the wardrobe, unsecured. Breakfast was adequate.
We assumed that a week later things would have been better. We were given a slightly larger room with all of the previous faults apart from a light switch that worked. At 11pm we were bombarded by horrendously loud music from below. When I called reception they were surprised I could hear the music ( It could be heard above the TV) and saithey'd close the door of the function room, no improvement. I then rang down and asked to move room. They told me that the music would be finished at midnight ( No apologies!). At 12.45am the music was still blaring , I rang down again and reception were surprised that I could hear it assuring me that they couldn't hear it. 20 minutes later the music stopped.
Only for the fact that I had prepaid for this "hotel" I would not have stayed. I would have preferred to sleep in a doorway had I a sleeping bag with me. I will be taking the issue up with the agent I booked this dive with

I had read mixed reviews about this hotel so wasn't really sure what to expect. However, we were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our stay.

Based on previous advice on tripadvisor (which said the classic rooms are poor) we made a point of booking a deluxe room. We got a large bright room on the fifth floor with a huge balcony with a great view over the park and out to sea. We were more than happy with the room, and so cannot comment on other negative reviews. Obviously some rooms are better than others.

Breakfast was included in our rate. The breakfast buffet was fine- though served in a large windowless room in the basement.

Absolutely the best thing about this hotel is the rooftop terrace bar and restaurant on the sixth floor. We did not eat there but enjoyed a drink at the bar in the evening .

The hotel has a very good location near the old town and close to the front. Good shops very close to the hotel- Hermes, Longchamps etc.

Other posters have commented on the roadworks outside - this is due to the new tram system being built in Nice- you can hardly blame the hotel for that. It will be fine when its finished!

I did however think that the reception staff could have been a bit more helpful. I asked about train times to Monte Carlo. They just said they didn't know- no offer to try and find out.

One restaurant definitely worth seeking out is La Merenda -hidden in a side street off the Cours Saleya in the old town. Tiny, with no phone- you have to go and book in person. But SO worth it!

We felt conned and misled by the publicity blurb on the website. "All rooms have a fabulous view of the bay or the enchanting city" is not true. Our window looked out onto a filthy wall only 3 feet away. "The 182 luminous, spacious rooms are decorated in sun-kissed shades of pale yellow" the hotel hasn’t been decorated since the 1970s it would seem and the carpets still retain all the smells of the last 30 odd years. Wallpaper is peeling from the walls and wooden furniture is literally rotting away. This is why first thing that strikes you about the Plaza is the musty smell.
When I complained I received incredulous looks and a remark “what did you expect when you only paid €180 per night?”

Having stayed in a Boscolo hotel in Rome we were expecting great things from this hotel. It is terrible. If you suffer from lift claustrophobia then book another hotel - two tiny lifts which crawled up and down the lift shaft. We were shown two bedrooms - the first was tiny and overlooked the back of the hotel and the bins- the second was larger and at the front of the building. Big mistake. The noise from the road was phenomenal (and we live on a main road in the UK!), the air conditioning pumped out hardly anything at all. The bed was comfortable but from nowhere in the night giant mosquitos appeared and in the morning we were covered in lumps. The bathroom needed to be taken away intact and put in a museum glorifying all that was fascinating about the 1970's. Avoid this place if you can. Also, Nice at night is not an attractive prospect - there are many people sleeping rough and beggars will come up to you if you eat outside of a restaurant. There are far far more beautiful and vibrant places in France and more up to date hotels which offer good value for money. This is not one of them!
