“I would give it 4 stars, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

... we were left with a nagging suspicion that they did not give us their best recommendations when we asked where we should go for dinner on our honeymoon.

When we asked the front desk for recommendations, it felt like they had their "set places" where they would send English speaking tourists... (more touristy, with ok tripadvisor ratings).

We wanted amazing food/experience on our honeymoon that locals go to. After we looked and saw that there was a cluster of extremely well-rated restaurants in Vieille ville (just tucked away - there were something like 10 of the top 25 rated restaurants in Nice)

I decided to give them another shot and ask specifically where in Vieille Ville they recommend and they still sent us to a the same touristy spot, Le Safari (decent, but I honestly don't think this is they place they send French guests when ask for the best spots).

We decided to trust our gut and head out to Le Maquis that night (ranked #9 of 960 restaurants), where there was no English on the menus... and the food/experience was simply amazing.

Come on guys - you can do better. This was our honeymoon. Tell us where you would go on an anniversary or special event, not where you like to funnel tourists that blindly follow your recommendations and prefer places that accomodate English-speaking guests.

We were hoping for a "friend's recommendation" and instead got a canned recommendation that I would expect from a larger hotel chain.

Eric

Dear guest,

I'm sorry that you didn't trust our recommandations. I probably advise Kei Matsuchima which is only 100/900 on trip advisor. Anyway, this restaurant has a Michelin star and this is definetely one of the best restaurant in Nice and next to our hotel, with local customers.

The Safary is selected by the Gantié guide, it is an "institution" in Nice, typical local cooking, very easy to find and probably the best on the main street where tourists like to stay for the atmosphere with the market flower. In winter, they have mainly local customers. And please note that I never met the manager, so we don't have any interest to advise this restaurant.

You should know that local people don't write any comments on tripadvisor. That's why restaurants we advise may not have a good rank. But, they are full everyday.

Concerning Le maquis, this is the first time that I hear from this restaurant. The first comment on tripadvisor is from july, so they probably open recently. I will be very pleased to try next time I have the opportunity.

I don't understand the interest to give you tripadvisor adress, as you already have it. You should know that Tripadvisor rank depends also on the quantity of comments on the website, and especially during the last months. Tripadvisor is an interesting tool for hotels as they don't have local customers and for new restaurants but it is also interesting to use gastronomique guide. This helps "old" restaurants to improve their tripadvisor rating.

Awaiting the pleasure to welcome you in our hotel,

Best regards,

Odile Payen

We only stayed in Nice one night, but the hotel was a great choice. It is a few blocks away from the beach and the flower market, but it is fine. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a little noisy with the windows open because we were just up one floor (2nd floor in the US, 1st floor in Europe). It was not too noisy at night. We had no trouble sleeping. The elevator was cool. We had coffee brought to the room one morning, which was pretty tasty. The shower was tiny, the smallest one we had in five hotels in Italy and France. So, if you need a big shower, this won't work for you.

Room Tip: Maybe go for a room on a higher floor. Ours on the 1st/2nd floor was just a little loud, but not bad...

Dear customer,

Thank you very much for your comment, I'm glad that you appreciate our hotel.
Concerning the shower, it is true that some rooms have little shower. This hotel was built as flats and transformed 100 years ago. Anyway, all rooms are differents, some have larger bathroom or medium shower, please ask for your main criteria when you book...

I stayed 2 nights at Windsor. It is close to the Promenade des Anglais. Within 5 mins you will find many nice restaurants on the way to Vieux Nice. Also there is a very pleasant Vietnamese restaurant just 2 blocks away from Windsor, it is quite reasonably priced too given the quality and portion. I also find every staff of the hotel friendly and always wear smiles which has made big difference to me as a solo traveller. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Dear guest,

Thanks to appreciate our hotel. Concerning the parking, we have 3 little spots next door for little cars and 3 larger spots in the garden next to the hotel. We also have a private box nearby to rent.
So, that's 7 spot all together and we are lucky in the center of Nice.
Please, next time book a larger spot.

Awaiting the pleasure to welcome you at the Windsor,

Best regards,

Very impressed by the Windsor. Quite good location with about 20 mins. walk to the Old Town. We didn't eat there at all but menu looked OK! Parking was a major problem but that is true for whole area There is now parking for about three cars right next door but difficult to locate due one-way system!!!!!!!! Staff were friendly & attentive. Decent bar area.

We chose this hotel because of its price and location, we weren't disappointed. Friendly & helpful staff. The room was big and spacious, as you'd expect for a period hotel. V.clean, everything you'd need. Massive bathroom, with a 'whirlpool' bath. Handheld shower only. Broken toilet seat.
It was in very quiet part of the town and we were able to sleep with the windows wide open all night. The little garden was lovely.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a balcony

Price/quality this hotel is perfect!
situated on walking distance of old nice, beach, shops,...
Since Nice is quite expensive in it's hotels, i would recommend this hotel to everyone.
Boutique hotel with only +/-35 rooms.
Just the shower was not to big..but that's the only comment i have..

The hotel is located very close to the sea and every interesting places in Nice. Room is rather small but cozy and first of all very clean. There is lovely garden which is great place to relax in the evening and drink some wine. I can't write anything about served food because I am rather used to eat in the local restaurants and brasseries. I recommend this boutique hotel especially that price (after season) was moderable.
