“Fantastic owner, made our holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

From the moment we arrived the owner went out of his way to be helpful, giving us what turned out to be great tips on where to go and where to eat. The room was big and clean and very comfortable, the small kitchenette was a bonus. The location is about 5 minutes walk from the sea and 10 from nice old town. We will definately be coming back to Nice and will definately stay here again, the owner was fantastic and made it a great holiday

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2011

After a hectic tour across the South of Italy (that was almost ruined by the notorious Italian train strikes) on a fine autumn evening, we managed to find the hotel after a 10 mins walk from the Nice railway station and boy were we in for a treat. Gilles who always wore a smile never shied away from giving the most accurate and apt instructions on what to see, shop, where to go and what to eat. Especially the Pinnochio ice cream parlour in the city center with its wacky menu is a must try. & There was his dog Fantine, with the most likable mannerisms for the warmth quotient ensuring our stay was a memorable one. The rooms although minimalist, didn't lack attention to detail with very clean sheets and extremely well maintained bathroom fittings. I liked the breakfast a lot with decent number of refills and helpings. Well through this review I'd like to express our heartfelt thanks for the hospitality and all the help, because 3 nights at Nice was the best part of our 15 days trip. Guess it goes without saying where would I prefer to stay in my next visit to the Cote D'Azur :)

P.S. Only gripe is that this review is long due in my "to do list"

We stayed here in November 2011. The TripAdvisor reviews were accurate - it's a lovely little hotel on a quiet street, well-situated in central Nice. The rooms are spotless and have an 'eco' ethic so there are polite requests not to smear lipstick on the sheets to avoid need for bleach.

Our room was 'standard' but was quite large, with a second dressing room containing the microwave, proper, empty half-sized fridge, cutlery and crockery. Each room appeared to be named after a French artist and furnished with prints of his or her work. The large windows opened out onto a lovely internal courtyard. Breakfast was served from ~0800 in a small room down the hall; there were plenty of tasty options including fresh pastries, bottled orange juice (not from concentrate), cheese and ham etc. We took the chance to walk breakfast back down the hall to our room, so buffet breakfast became breakfast in bed.

On the downside, the hotel is only manned part-time (seemingly 0800-1200 on the weekend we were there) so less available for 'concierge' type enquiries at all hours. This also meant that we were not able to check out late on the Sunday: the hotel itself closed at 1200 midday 'and will not reopen until next Friday' so we couldn't leave our heavy bags there, which was frustrating. Next time I'll check in advance!

Overall would definitely recommend this hotel.

We loved the Victor Hugo Nice. My parents and I stayed in the Suite Jean Cocteau (1 double bed and a separate room with a kitchenette and a twin bed), and it was just right for us. The Victor Hugo is a gorgeous old building -- no sterile hotel atmosphere here. The rooms were spotless, street parking abundant, and Giles and his lovely dog were great hosts. The breakfast galley is a bit small, but we ate well and Giles gave us great tips on how to spend our days/evenings. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better spot on such a great block (two blocks from the Promenade and the Hotel Negresco).

Lovely little guest house. We stayed in the smallest room although it was plenty big enough with plenty of floor space. The bathroom was very small, but it was nicer to have the space in the actual room. Clean with a very comfy bed, a fridge, microwave and some cutlery and crockery.
The breakfast room is very small, like a galley kitchen with the cold buffet on the right, with kettle and coffee machine, and a breakfast bar along the left side so you sit next to each other facing the wall rather than at a table. But, food could be taken to our room where there was a small table and chairs if we'd have preferred.
We were given a key to our room and the main door so could come and go when we pleased and Gilles the owner and his lovely dog were available from 8am until about 8pm every day.
It is conveniently located for the train station, beach, shopping area and there are bus stops and a Velo Bleu station around the corner.

Perfect small hotel, close to both the promenade and the train station.

clean rooms, very friendly service and an excellent continental breakfast in the morning.

Gilles was the perfect host, helpful in every way possible and gave us information on what to see and how exactly to get there, the best places to eat and just made an excellent holiday even better.

We spent 4 nights in July in this charming little Hotel / B&B near Boulevard des Anglais and Rue de France (Shopping!) and we loved it! The house is a beautiful old palais, the Hotel is completely renovated, the tasteful decoration of all the rooms is related to Victor Hugo. All rooms are equipped with a kitchenette, the airconditioning works very well. The owner Monsieur Demay is a very nice person: friendly and helpful (he even borrows beach towels to the guests) and owns a lovely dog named Fantine. A nice breakfast buffet is offered. We really recommend this charming place!
