“Great value in Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

The BW Hotel Roosevelt was within walking distance of the train station, on the way to the Promenade des Anglais. We were about 3 shorts blocks west of the tramline and buses, so these were easily reached.

We had a (European) 2nd floor triple room for my wife, our 25 yo daughter, and me and we stayed 4 nights. There were 3 single beds side by side by side, no rollaways or foldouts. The room had a wraparound French balcony and was very large by European standards. And there was a small refrigerator (probably a former minibar). This was great for us since we tend to eat in our room after shopping at the grocery stores nearby. Breakfast was not included in the room rate and did not seem like a good value at EUR 12,00 per person per day. So we could pick up food the day before and eat breakfast in our room the next morning. We had an electric water kettle and porcelain cups and saucers, as well as Nescafe and tea.

One odd quirk was the need to put a room key into a slot by the door to have electricity. But reception gladly supplied us with a 2nd key card so we could keep the refrigerator going.

The room rate was one of the best we received on our stay in Europe in 3/2013. We felt we received very good value and would definitely stay here again.

By the way, we flew out of the Nice airport—what a stunning view of the Mediterranean and of the snow packed Alps! Highly recommended. Reception booked MedTours for airport transportation. A minivan came right on time on a Sunday morning and whisked us to the airport. Only EUR 29,00 for all 3 of us and our luggage. Taxis are a rip-off in Nice—avoid if possible.

Room Tip: Great value if you need a triple room. Ask for a balcony--this was fun.

Set amongst shops and restaurants in a pleasant area in the centre of Nice, easily accessible from the airport. Old town, tourist sights and railway station nearby. All reception staff friendly, helpful and spoke good English. Our triple room was spacious with a large bathroom, all of which was very clean (much to my wife's satisfaction). Free use of safe in the room! Continental breakfast available if required, adequate and everything was fresh, reasonable value for 12 euros. A welcome touch having free hot drinks and croissants available for guests during the day and evening. A comfortable hotel and good value for the money, would recommend.

I have a feeling that finding a reasonably-priced, good hotel room in Nice is not an easy thing to do. This hotel seemed to fit that profile based on reviews but after staying there, I'm not so sure. The hotel is in a pretty central location, but further away from the shore than other options. Cleanliness was all right in the bedroom but not the best in the bedroom with several hairs to be found lying around and even on a new towel. The bathroom was absolutely tiny and poorly-designed. The bidet had its own spacious corner while the toilet was crammed in between the sink and shower. It was a maneuver every day to reach the toilet; it's probably one of the worst-designed bathrooms I've ever seen.

There was a safe in the room, but in a first, it wasn't attached to anything. So you could just lift it up off its shelf. I'm not sure how secure your things are in something that can just be taken out of the room whole by somebody. The free internet ranged from exceedingly slow to unusable. It constantly had trouble opening a simple Gmail page. There was supposedly A/C and heat in the room but despite the very warm room, the A/C setting just produced hot air.

Finally, there was the noise from other rooms. The room was in the back (as requested) and thus was quiet from any street noise. But one could hear snoring, normal conversations, doors slamming, and sexual activity from the other rooms. Trying to use the A/C fan noise to block this out was unsuccessful since as noted above the A/C actually warmed the room further.

All in all, I would not stay again. I gave it 3 rather than 2 stars mainly because I think there are many even worse hotels in Nice...

Room Tip: Rooms away from the street (back of the hotel) have less street noise but that doesn't help with...

I got to know this charming hotel back in January, but my most recent stay was a short business trip from 27/28 March, 2013. As usual the receptionists, notably Caroline, made me feel most welcome and gave me an excellent room as before. The hotel is in a fairly elegant part of town, very central but not noisy, the rooms are tidy and well-equipped, the service is excellent, and the breakfast is generous. I can't compare it with similar hotels in Nice, admittedly, but on the other hand, why bother when this one is so good?

We stayed here for four nights last September. The hotel is located in a nice area, with boutique shops surrounding it (good for window shopping!). The main shopping streets and many restaurants are nearby, and it is a short walk to the beach and the old town. It is also a short walk to the bus station, to catch a bus to Monaco, it costs only 1 EUR one way!

The room we stayed in was on the second floor, with the window facing the back of the hotel. Not the nicest view, but it was quiet and we slept alright. The room was quite compact, and we did a bit of rearranging of the furniture (moved the huge chair) for extra space and we stored our empty suitcases in the bathroom. The sink drain was a bit slow (almost blocked) and we filled in the complaint form in our room as advised. After a couple of days it was still blocked, so we fixed it ourselves. There could have been a hook for the hand towel next to the sink (we put it over the empty soap dispenser)… a small detail missing in many hotels.

We booked through the hotels website in French (used Google translate), and took advantage of the breakfast offer (1 EUR/person). If you book in English, it is 12 EUR/person. The breakfast was of a good quality, and complimentary coffee and croissants were available during the daytime as well. We also appreciated the free Wi-Fi.

thank you for your review.
sorry about the slow sink. you should have reported it directly to reception and we would have done something very quickly. you wrote it down on the quality questionnaire that is collected, if filled, after departure! sorry about this.
i am pleased that you appreciated the hotel and that you recommend it

Stayed there for three nights over an extended weekend in March (stay three, pay two nights). Hotel is very centrally located but quiet nevertheless (close to shopping area, Place de Massena and the beach front) and very well maintained - very helpful staff. Rooms are good sized with nice bathrooms and amneties (we had a baby cot, baby bath tub etc.) - all one needs for a reasonable price. Breakfast was great for just 12 EUR per person (fresh juice, eggs, baguette, croissant etc.). Really, really good value for money - minor downside is the very small elevator (our pram just about fitted in with one person squeezing in) ;-)

Hello and a big THANK YOU for your review!
i am so glad that you had a nice stay with us considering the terrible weather and the pouring rain during your stay !!!
sorry about the lift as it is true that it is a bit small, specially with a baby cart.

Friendly and helpful staff. Modern decor. Well planned lobby and breakfast room with a computer and printer available. A location within walking distance of the old city and promenade des Anglais. Excellent breakfast. The room we had ( a double) was adequate in size and the beds comfortable. Any street noise was dampened by sound proofing windows. The only improvement that we can suggest is the bedside lamps- they really are inadequate for reading- but this is an issue common to most hotels. Does no one check these out before they are installed? Price is very reasonable.
