The contrast of this dark and beautiful Russian Cathedral against the palms and Mediterranean sun of Nice is striking. The exterior and grounds were very quiet when we visited, and offered plenty of great photo ops (which Russians absolutely love, anyway).
Inside, the Russian Orthodox history and tradition was almost palpable. Very much a working church, there were many people praying and the silence was overwhelming. My shoes squeaked a lot on the parquet floor, which made me absolutely terrified to take a stroll around the ornate displays, but I was able to remedy that with a wide ostrich-step.
We were chased off the grounds at noon for a service. Be sure to check the schedule before you visit, as there aren't many places nearby to wait.
Definitely worth a detour to see this site after you tire of the waterfront.
