“Quite an experience in Nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Negresco in Nice. An iconic hotel that was celebrating its 100 year anniversary while we were there. Very expensive, but a unique experience made it justifiable one time (US$475/night). If we visit Nice again we will probably stay at a less expensive hotel. The room was quaint and unique and of good size. It was an upgraded room with a balcony overlooking the ocean to the north. The staff were friendly and spoke English well. The location couldn't have been any better along the bus line. However, the train station was quite a long walk to make the short trip to Monte Carlo/Monaco. It was a short walk to many nice sidewalk restaurants and the promanade and Old Town and the port were within a 30-45 minute stroll along the ocean front.

This place makes you feel like you've traveled back in time. Service is quite good and you pay the price for it. For me it seems too expensive. Then again the riviera is expensive and France particularly. So we enjoyed. The food at the hotel restaurant was quite good but we had better when we went to Grasse to Bastide st Antoine. By the way this hotel is on the promenade, beach front but a stroll away from city center. Worth trying if in your budget.

Lovely old hotel with fascinating history, superb furnishings, eclectic artworks and sumptuous decor.
This place oozes charm & has many original features from it's interesting past.
Spotless throughout. We enjoyed a beautiful bedroom complete with stunning furniture, a bust of Marie Antoinette and gold-finished bathroom suite with top quality marble tiling throughout; with balcony overlooking the seafront and adjoining gardens.
Staff were almost exclusively polite and friendly, with a couple of exceptions who were a trifle snooty.
One point to bear in mind..the main road is very busy and the traffic noise can be obtrusive if you have sensitive hearing.
Apart from that, this is the place to stay in Nice if you appreciate quality & tradition.
Well done Mme Augier, you have created a wonderful residence.

Every now and then, a hotel actually "wows" me into giving a five star review, and this hotel accomplished that. I know people complain about it being outdated, but the bottom line is that the hotel is a historic hotel-it is really not SUPPOSED to look like the peninsula hotel. If you go there knowing that the point is not to have a new and shiny room, and you are someone who really appreciates art, you will love it here. I was treated really well- I went in the off season and got upgraded to a wonderful water view room. If I visit in the high season, I will likely just pay the money for a waterview room as I think it is worth it.

Stayed here for a short break. This hotel is just special - it feels like you are walking into a living museum. We got a good deal for a few days, and although the room was a little small by modern standards, and things aren't quite as swish as you might expect, the overall experience is fabulous. All the fixtures and fittings are out of the last century and beautifully maintained. The lift is like something out of the science museum, and all plush and padded, there are art works everywhere and the staff dress like they have been brought in with a time machine. The piano bar is great - we regarded the high cost as the entrance fee to yet another museum. There is a tapestry from the early 17th century! All the better for the embarrassing antics of a few wealthy folk who had had a drop too much to drink. A great experience!

Both my husband and I stayed at this famous hotel many years ago before we were married and coming back was a big disappointment.
The hotel is tired looking, the few authentic antiques are laid out in a very casual manner which do nothing to improve the decor.
The rooms need attention, both in paint jobs as well as fixing up the fabric walls.
The mattress does not fit the bed frame!

We ate dinner in the Rotonde restaurant of the hotel and I must say that I have gotten better meals in the auto grills from Italy to France.

This is not a 5 star hotel by any means and for the most part the staff just hangs around and is un-attentive, with some exceptions.

The only positive is the bathroom except for the hairdryer which needs to be updated.

I am truly disappointed as this was once one of the great hotels on the French Riviera.

My friend and I had wanted to dine in the hotel but we were stopped at the entrance by the hotel staff. Upon hearing that we were on business trip, the staff allowed us to enter the hotel.
This is total discrimination. To be honest, I have seen more beautiful hotels. This defintely doesn't even rate highly in my list.
