“Cool Church!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

I just love seeing medieval architecture and when it is this well-preserved it is definitely a bonus. The town of Frejus is warm and friendly as well, especially during the holiday season when we visited.

“Beautiful cloisters, but do get the tourist pass”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

Frejus is a magical city. By that I mean the old town, ten minutes bus ride from the seaside. It was a Roman city created in the time of Julius Caesar, and the city has preserved many of the Roman sites, including the aquaduct.

The cloisters is right beside the Cathedral in the old town, on the Market Square and the market is held twice a week there: a really lively place to visit.

What struck me is the great sense of peace in the cloisters. I could picture myself as a monk or nun there, looking onto the inner courtyard, the rose garden, and well and walking up and down the stairs to my room, before worship in the cathedral. The mythical symbols of dragons, reptiles and 'beasties' are painted on the ceilings in wonderful colours, most portraying scenes of hell. (Remember the days when RE teachers and priests told us we'd go to hell if we didn't behave?!)

Do take advantage of the Frejus tourism passport, which allows you to visit 5 sites for just 6,50 euros in a week. Well worth it, and it saved us 15 euros in entrance fees.

“A must-see if you are in Frejus”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

You have to take a guided tour to see the cloister but it is well worth it. There are leaflets available in several languages if you are not a French speaker. The carved wooden doors and the 5th century Baptistery are included in the tour and either of them would be worth a visit on their own, but the stars of the show are the painted panels in the cloister. Unusually, very few are on religious themes. Some are scenes from everyday medieval life, which gives an interesting insight into our ancestors' activities, but by far the largest number show fabulous hybridised monsters as a warning to the faithful what they would be meeting if they strayed from the virtuous life and were sent to Purgatory for their sins. At the end of the tour there is a captioned 10-minute film, which is informative and also shows how the original colours must have sung in their heyday.
