I found this accommodation whilst searching on the internet, and the beautiful pictures of the house and pool caught my eye- well, we were not disappointed! The accommodation is every bit as beautiful as the photographs.

What we can't unfortunately capture is the impeccable service. Every morning we went down to the pool house and a couple of minutes later, Clare or Steve showed up carrying a bowl laden with fresh fruit, a basket filled with bread and pastries, and fresh coffee. In the evening we would go down for dinner and start up the BBQ, and a few minutes later, we would again be greeted with plates and cutlery! Even lemons from the tree in the garden one day when we cooked fish! All in all, Steve and Clare seem to have an innate sense of hospitality, and will do everything within their power to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Steve turning my car around for me every morning was a lovely touch (and probably saved the clutch on the rental car!). They were helpful and friendly, but unobtrusive.

Which brings me on to location. A car, in my opinion, is a necessity if you want to see the area, e.g. Nice, Cannes, St Paul de Vence etc. It is possible to get around on foot/public transport, but having a car would greatly enhance your stay (not to mention giving you the independence to go to the supermarket, then stock the fridge full of goodies for the BBQ!).

The location in itself is very good. Perfect for exploring the Côte d'Azur and Provence- 30 mins to Nice (depending on the traffic), and 20 mins on average to a lot of the hill towns.

Make sure you take advantage of Steve's recommendations- we went to a gem of a restaurant in Bar-sur-Loup. I lived in France for a year and never did I find such a good restaurant!

So, in conclusion, if you want to see the 'real' France, and also see the coastal towns but have a break when it all gets too much, and just relax by the pool instead, La Surprise is perfect.

  • Liked — Relaxed nature of the place, plus the location (proximity to the hill towns and the coast)
  • Disliked — Unable to get around easily/quickly without the car BUT that's what the BBQ is for- drink and eat at La Surprise!

I stayed at La Surprise throughout the recent Cannes Film Festival with 2 other friends of mine also attending the festival. We Chose La Surprise as a good friend of ours advised us to do so after staying the previous year.
My time at La Surprise could not be more enjoyable. Steve and Clare are wonderful hosts who are willing to help out with anything you need, and also sit and have a chat over breakfast.
The rooms are well decorated, have a very comfortable feel to them and are well facilitated.
The breakfast, which is included in the cost is a great way to start the day. Fresh fruit, fresh bread and coffee or juice is a great way to start your day, especially if the weather is nice.
I couldnt speak more highly of my stay at La Surprise, and would eagerly recommend it to any one staying in the area,

  • Liked — the great service
  • Disliked — I wasnt there long enough

I had the pleasure of staying with Clare & Steve at La Surprise in May of this year {2008} with my friends Paul and Andy while we were in France for the 61ST Cannes Film Festival.

We were told my our good friend John Morris to stay at this bed and breakfast place about 22 KHS out of Cannes as it was quiet and peacfull and away from the rat race of Cannes and because the hosts {Clare & Steve} were just so nice, so we took John's advice and we booked our stay with Steve via the internet and it was at this early stage that we realized this man and his wife were just so obliging, it was like "Hey wait a minute no one is this nice" but they were, offering to pick us up at the airport {a small and fair charge applied} so we felt good about this booking.

Then when we met Steve and arrived at La Surprise it just got better, the place is beautiful, the rooms so clean and fresh but most of all it was as though we had arrived at a long lost Auntie & Uncles place, there was Charlie the beloved dog who belongs to Clare and Steve and Charlie just is great fun and a pleasure to play with and be around, so for anyone that is not an animal or dog person well you will be when you meet Charlie the labrador.

Every morning we woke up to breakfast of beautiful croissant's and a huge fresh bowl of fruit salad and fresh yoghurt and fresh brewed coffee, juics and jams of all differnet kinds.

The best thing about the breakfast and mornings was waking up to the stunning views, while sitting in or outside the pool house over looking stunning views of Grasse and even Cannes in the far distance.

Steve would always be on hand if we wanted a chat and to have this man and his wife there to be friendly and make the day start well was just so important to Paul and Andy and I s it started the day off on a god note.

We were planning to hire scooters, but we felt personally it was a little dangerous for us so through the goodness of his own heart Steve offered to drive us into Cannes every day and pick us up whenever we were ready, it did not matter at what time, he was there to help us, ys we paid for petrol but that was it, this man is just so caring so I can not reccomend to stay with them more highly, it will be the best thing you ever do.

The prices to stay are great, and even if you have two or 3 people in the same room the price for the room is the same so this is a deal you will not find any where else around that area.

The saddest part about leaving La Surprise was that you end up leaving two new friends for life and their beloved dog Charlie, but it is made easier by knowing they will always be a plane trip and a visit away to see again.

Do I reccomend La Susprise to others? YES 100% It is friendly, stunning, fun, relaxed, quiet when you want it to be quiet, you can have parties if you want them or just laze by the big pool in peace if that's your thing, as both Steve and Clare will be there to make it all happen for you, just keep an eye on your slippers with Charlie as he likes to be a little naughty at times but he ads so much to the fun of your stay at La Surprise.

THIS WILL BE THE BEST STAY AWAY YOU HAVE EVER HAD. TRUST ME and feel free to email me on hiddentalentfilms@yahoo.com.au for any questions or advice, I am more than happy to answer your questions because I want others to experience what Paul, Andy I I did.

Have a great stay there ;-} Stephen Sherrard-Griffith

PS Make sue you look at my photo's and visit the little kiosk up the road where Chef Alex will make you the finest gourmet pizza you have ever had and these awesome kebabs with chips in them, different but brilliant and Alex is worth visiting as he is so funny and friendly and a great chef.

  • Liked — Great service and the rooms are clean and homely and great scener and people around the town
  • Disliked — I honestly can't say a bad word about it. There were no T.V's or internet but the owner let use use his internet but I didn't miss T.V. at all, it was actually a bonus because there is so much to go and see and do so why would you want a T.V. and the hosts would get you one if you really wanted one, they are that accomodating.

The place is beautifully scenic, clean, calm and married with the amazing kindness of hosts Steve, Claire and Charlie plus the tasty fresh breakfast provided by Steve, Claire and local french master chief Alex, its extremely hard to realise your not in a dream. Stayed for 3 nights, the owners were wonderful even driving us to hospital when my partner was taken ill and staying with me to wait - how lovely is that.

The room was gorgeous and clean and the garden is gorgeous. Breakfast was a real treat. Cannot recommend highly enough. Truly lovely!!!!!!!!!
