“Truly wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We just returned from four nights at La Bastide. The foie gras entrée on the lunch menu was outstanding (I had it twice), as was the daurade and the dos de boeuf. The chocolate/mango dessert blended flavors and textures in a way you have to taste to believe. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the countryside is relaxing and romantic, to say the least. What made the stay really special was the exceptional service and attentiveness of the staff.

“Great location, beautiful setting – not as good as on previous visits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

We have eaten here several times before, and this was not the best meal. Some of the dishes suffered from being too “complicated” without hitting the spot.
We had the set lunch at €61: the amuse-bouches a little too fussy, and the four tastes were neither complementary nor sufficiently different or challenging.
The starters were excellent: octopus in potatoes and olive oil (although small portion), and risotto with langoustines.
Mains were good – lamb two ways – navarin with aubergine and potatoes (although slightly oriental flavor which was missing from description); beef perfectly cooked; 3 and 4?
Desserts were far to too fussy and overly complicated and just not right: dark chocolate tart topped with mango and that hidden with milk chocolate cream (that did not look appetizing).
Wine was affordable – Cassis rosé; other drinks were stupidly expensive: coke €7 and liter San Pellegrino €8.
Fantastic breads of all shapes and sizes, served non-stop by a smiling older staff member.
Otherwise the service was not top, either: While there were a few senior (manager types) around, wait staff looked a little disheveled – uniforms not fitting properly, shirts untucked – all a little sloppy. At times they seemed a little inexperienced and not quite up to the challenge of the locale.
We took our time ordering, and the amuse-bouches were sitting outside waiting, and were almost served while we were still holding our menus.
We were seated at a table with tree leaves falling onto one of the settings constantly – although other table was available. Only when we did not smile at the comment that “this is nature and the price for eating outside” were we re-seated - at a table that had been free al the while.
Requests for tap water were met, albeit with some delay at times, and it took too long to settle the bill.
Not that we really needed it - but there is no menu available in English. When we asked for one, the maître came and said he could translate... We should have taken him up on it and have him go through the entire menu, just for the fun of it...
Not sure whether we will visit again on next trip to the region. There is better value to be had in the area – see other reviews from the same trip.

“Michelin starred setting and food, truly wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

Such a beautiful place, the views are magnificent and the food compliments this.

The fixed lunch menu of €63 euros is really good value and the choice per course is fantastic.

The experience makes me want to stay here now, maybe next year...

“Excellent dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

We had a fantastic dinner at the Bastide in Grasse. It was a perfect evening all round , the food was wonderful , the service very good but the only slight problem was the time it took to have dinner. We were told that 2 of the chefs fell off their motorbike on the way to work leaving mr Chibois to do all the work him self. Under the circumstances he performed miracles. On other occasions the gap between courses has been perfect.
All in all a great evening. Highly recommended.

“A bargain Masterpiece theatrical production and just for Lunch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

From start to finish we felt like we were experiencing a grand symphony of culinary delights.......the starters and entrees were sublime but it was the little elegant dishes in between that blew us away in gleeful bliss.........this place is off the charts.......a humble 1 star Michelin that produces as well as any 3 star.........they love what they are doing and it really shows........it is a wonderful day trip from Nice or "Cannes" and should be at the top of the list for dining in that area as we experienced nothing that fell in Chibois shadow...........an instantaneous standing ovation! And the French children playing in the grass were delightful! And it was an economic bargain to boot!
