“Educational and fun”

Our hosts at Le Vallon directed us to visit Guy for a memorable wine tasting, and we have to say that we are glad that they did. He speaks excellent English and loves telling stories behind the wines. He also appreciates flavors and styles from any source, as we discovered when the conversation strayed over to whiskey. We have decided that for the experience, we owe him a bottle of something that we are pretty sure that he can't obtain locally.

“Excellent and entertaining!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012 via mobile

The Chateauneuf-du-Pape AOC is one of the most renowned wines of the southern part of the Loire Valley, particularly for its red wines.

As a "beginner" when it comes to wine, I'd tried certain Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines in Canada but it basically left me wanting to know more. My husband and I decided to book with Guy at les Caves Saint Charles primarily due to the reviews on TripAdvisor but also because we felt we would learn quite a bit.

We sampled about 7 reds and 1 white, all with such a wide range of smells and tastes. I ended up buying about six bottles - we would have preferred shipping but the cost and rules for doing so to Canada is simply ridiculous.

Guy truly was a highlight. He was very knowledgable, easy to talk to had a great sense of humour! If we are ever in the region again we will definitely stop by!

“Sublime experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

We emailed Guy for an appointment back in March. It was the most enjoyable and detailed tasting that we have ever experienced. His knowledge of the wines was superb. We were very relaxed and felt like we were in his private cave. He spoke English and was very down-to-earth. We are having a case sent to us in cooler weather. Tip: park in the main center in front of the bank- 1€ per hour and walk up to see him. Good signage. Great town.

“Excellent Wine Tasting Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

We visited Guy in early-to-mid September 2012 and had an excellent wine tasting experience. We called ahead to make an appointment. It is recommended that you do this to ensure you get good time with him. He had 6 wines for us to taste, 5 reds and 1 white. He talked us through the differences between all of them and why they tasted so different. He makes it easy to ship to California (although it isn't cheap) and made sure we had a good time. He speaks very good English. Highly recommended if you want a good wine tasting experience with this region's wines!

There are some benches in there and we had our 8 year old sit on one of them playing a game until we were done. No issues there. Using GPS can be a challenge to find him. Rely on his well drawn map online instead. The streets are very narrow near his location so keep that in mind.

“Awesome - A private chat with a Master Sommelier.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012 via mobile

We sought out the cellar based on the other reviews on here, and we were certainly not disappointed. Guy is friendly, warm, professional and has probably forgotten more about wine than most of us ever knew. You won't get bargain basement prices here, but that's ok; if you want them go to Carrefour. There was no hard sell, we walked in unannounced and had a private tasting of several whites and reds, with Guy talking us through each variety and year. I'm not sure where else you'd have relaxed access to a Master Sommelier. Came away with one 28 Euro bottle, and will be hitting the website to have more sent to us. Fabulous experience all round. Highly recommend.
