Our tour started at 9AM when we were picked up by the driver with a comfortable minivan. We started by visiting first the L’Isle sur Sorgue were we spend sometime time and visited the Sunday market. Then we headed to Fontaine de Vaucluse and small and picturesque village were Petrarch once lived in exile from Florence. From Fontaine de Vaucluse we drove to Gordes were we had the surprise of seeing many vintage cars. The view is spectacular and this small medieval village is beautiful. Next we visited Rousillon which is a beautiful village, with its red “ochre” rocks and buildings and narrow streets. It is the color ochre, and its relief which make this village spectacular. We then took the road up to Les Baux de Provence which passes through olive groves and vineyards. The village is a stone and cobblestone medieval village with multiple cafes and souvenir shops. The village also has a castle which can be visited. An interesting finding is that bauxite was named after the village of Baux de Provence. We next stopped in St. Remis de Provence the city were Nostradamus has lived and was also made famous by Van Gogh which spent time at the asylum St. Paul de Mausole. We had time to walk through the city, see the house were Nostradamus lived and also have a coffee at a café in city center. We passed by the St. Paul asylum, but had no time for a visit. We next went to visit the roman aqueduct at Pont du Garde. This aqueduct is 2000 years old and is the highest of all Roman aqueducts. The aqueduct it is also very well preserved. We returned to Avignon after a pleasant and culturally rich day around 6:30PM. Our driver Jacques was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and pleasant. We plan to return to see more of Provence.
